Asked Coach about Darryn

What the deal was, when he knew, etc. Coach Self said Darryn Peterson didn't practice yesterday, so playing tonight was 50-50. Flu-like symptoms. Self said he didn't know that Peterson wouldn't play until 7:00 or 7:30

@Shay is there a reason he wasn’t on the injured list then if he didn’t practice? Or do they not have to put illness on if it

Did anyone practice yesterday? Wouldn't we had the day off between games?

List him as questionable on every injury report.

This is where I will step in and remind people that we just recently played at Tech and Christian Anderson didn’t play because of the flu. Do people think Christian Anderson didn’t want to play at home against Kansas? They didn’t know until right up to the start of the game. This shit happens. I also understand everyone’s frustration with DP. He needs to start being dependable. He did just play back to back games at 30+ minutes. I just don’t think the kid would do that and then want to miss the Arizona game. I wish I could remember the other team that was missing a star player this past weekend with the flu. If he doesn’t play against Iowa State then it’s time to move on.

I don’t think you do. Clearly you don’t fully appreciate how much Kansas Fan suffers.

In isolation I would agree. However. I’ve never seen anything like this and it’s far from an isolated incident. This is insane.

The 🐐 played a historic game with the flu. Or hungover. Either way.

"I went into the training room, he's in there trying, and I said, 'Can you?' and he said, 'Coach, I don't think I can,'" Self said. "And to be honest with you, I would probably rather him not play if he couldn't contribute, just because we'd spend 20 minutes trying to get him shots or whatever, and if he doesn't feel it, then I would much rather do it the way that it happened. So, he tried, but he just couldn't get there."

"The one thing about [Peterson] that's been positive is we have played without him, and we've actually been more aggressive individually a lot of times when he was not in the game," Self said. "Now, we're not as good, but we're more aggressive individually. ... I don't know that we would have played that aggressively if [Peterson] had been in the game because he's getting a lot of those touches and a lot of those shots."

It’s funny because when they post KU stats with and without DP there really isn’t that much difference. Our ceiling is obviously much higher with DP just being slated in and playing consistently but unfortunately that hasn’t been the case this year. KU is 10-3 (loses to WVU, UCF, and UNC) with DP and 9-2 without him (loses to Duke and UConn). Guys like Jamari, Tiller, and Elmarko seem like different players when DP isn’t available. Obviously we need DP to hit our ceiling but it’s not like this team is DP and a bunch of scrubs.

DP aside, my concern now is who can't go at ISU because of flu or whatever this is.

Have played 3 top 5 ranked teams this season, and DP has sat out every game.

Heard a great conspiracy theory about this game via Joe House (Bill Simmons BFF) MJ and crew were reportedly smoking cigars when the pizza man showed up. Upon arrival, MJ allegedly spit on the pizzas to ensure nobody else would eat the pizzas. And then ate them....with the tobacco juice still on the pizza. Thus - the flu was actually tobacco poisoning. It sounds so wild but also something that MJ would do. I'm a believer.

With ISU, Houston, and Arizona still coming up, he has 3 more chances to play vs a top 5 team.

Christian Anderson was also dressed and on the bench. He was jumping on the bike and staying loose. He was doing everything he could to play, seemed like he was basically begging.

Some here are acting as though it is just this board. Or Jayhawks fans. The entire sports world thinks this is bizarre at best. GMs are being questioned about it. National sports guys are talking about it. Tommy Lloyd was asked about it post game. Gimme a break with the "nothing to see here" stuff. To say it is odd is an understatement.

Christian Anderson hasn't missed half the season with 5 hammies, 4 cramps, and 3 illnesses. Peterson must be the most unfortunate athlete in the country. Plus, Anderson was warming up, on the bike most of the game, getting fluids before the game and at halftime, he was at least trying everything he could to go, Peterson, not so much.

Self thought he would go. Then probably his agent showed up about 7-7:30 PM. That’s when he for sure knew DP was a no go.

Does that make it better. To me if you are good enough to do that why didn’t he play. I actually think the optics of that could be worse than staying in the locker room because you legitimately feel like ass. Self has had other guys miss games due to illness in the past and they are never on the bench. That actually makes little to no sense to be honest, you are sick but let’s go hang on the bench.
