Clemson nation needs to know this

I know very few will care but thought some should know. The band budget has been basically slashed by 60% over the last year because of the major budget cuts at Clemson. To say it’s been a tough year, is an understatement. The band program has barely gotten by, and yet they do everything possible to support the football team. 140 kids went to New York this weekend, as Clemson could not afford to take the whole band (340 kids total in band.) They stayed over an hour away, and in the middle of nowhere, and had brown water/no hot water in their hotel room because that’s how bad the situation was at their hotel. They then got to the Yankee Stadium and sat outside for 10+ hours in the cold, no warmth, no heat, nothing. They played their hearts out. After the game, there was barely enough food for 30% of the band to eat. They then went to the airport, where they were delayed for almost 7 hours before finally taking off. Meanwhile, I think the football team got home in three hours. I just wanted everyone to know that in the age of NIL, there are still college age kids who are doing this for no money, and truly believe in Clemson. I wish all of Clemson nation knew that. They do not get the support they deserve from the University and it’s a shame.

Yeah, unfortunately there was really no reason to bring the band for this game if we are being honest. Or pay to bring the coaching staffs family or BOT.

My appreciation to anyone that has been a member of tiger band past and present. Clemson needs to do better.

That's very discouraging. It sounds like Clemson needs to be a lot better across the board, and a good time for Clements to go.

They stayed in Tarrytown, an hour away. Clemson said they couldn’t afford for the whole band to go, which I get. But on social media when you see every assistant coach’s, wife and family in New York City having the time of their lives, and your kid has brown water and no hot water, and then no food… It’s a lot to swallow. And the band barely can afford snacks during home games…it’s bad. These kids practice 30 hours a week and get zero reward. I just think sometimes Clemson nation needs to realize that.

When I was in school, tiger band was pretty aggressive with fundraising and alumni engagement. Is that still the case?

I would love to hear how Dabo reacts to this.... Of course at the moment he has bigger fish to fry but, as much as I goof on the band, this sucks.

Interesting - so they’re not connected to the athletics budget at all? I know back in 2011-2015 the band traveled with the cheerleaders and always got priority over them. The cheerleaders were constantly screwed until finally the athletic department started taking better care of them. Stories like this make me terrified Clemson is going to fall back into the 90s with a lack of funding/desire to win. I feel like even the stadium experience has gotten stale and there are no Pom poms, towels, etc. to try to energize the students.

I thought IPTAY funded the band. Are you telling us the university funds it? Has it always been this way?

I get it. I wasn’t in the band in college. Then when my Tiger joined drumline and literally gave 40 hours a week to band while also studying their butt off, I changed my mind. It’s grueling. Had no clue. Most don’t. And those kids aren’t doing it for recognition—they truly just love it. Psychos! But when they aren’t getting fed and are showering in brown water, word will get out and kids will stop being in Tiger Band. And that is the shame. I know you all make fun of band kids but these kids works their ass off. They arrive two weeks ahead of time to begin the grind.

Nope. They are funded via athletics and academics. Academics cut their budget by 40 percent this year with zero warning. It’s been awful. No iptay.

Sounds like a big picture problem for an Athletic Director to address. There are a lot of issues like this cropping up in our program including charging the students ticket fees and them getting tickets to 2 home games a year. We are losing the next generation of fans and donors with short-sighted decisions.

No one should make fun of college band kids. I partied with the drum corps at U Terrace. My liver carries those scars to this day. The U Terrace bug spray gin bucket haunts my dreams. “Naw y’all too rowdy and I got practice tomorrow” - upstairs neighbor Duane Coleman, 2006.

Exactly. But barely fed the band kids. And again the band kids won’t complain as they are too nice—so I’m telling you.

The BOT needs to be made aware of this. That is terrible. Fell bad for kids and their parents. Embarrassing for school. Why did they need to cut their budget! Probably budgeted for x amount of out of states kids to in roll and didn’t happen. Not a good look.

Would never make fun of a student in band. That’s terrible. Thank your child for the commitment and for bringing awareness to this. Sure hope they get it fixed.
