How is Jayden Daniels still not the Heisman favorite? What's the future for LSU's defense? | Mailbag

The latest Heisman Trophy odds were updated ahead of Week 12 of the regular season and there’s a new favorite.

Not only is there a new favorite, it’s a big odds on favorite to win college football’s biggest individual award. This is the final stretch to make an impression to become a finalist.

Let’s dive into the latest Heisman Odds, via Bet MGM, ahead of Week 12 with a bonafide favorite among us.

Bo Nix, Oregon QB (-110)

Nix is now the favorite overall. No longer are there plus-odds on the Oregon quarterback based on the way he’s played this season.

Nix is the frontrunner due to his last game, where he out-dueled last year’s winner Caleb Williams. He now has 3,135 yards, 29 touchdowns, two interceptions and a 77.7% completion percentage. Nix also has 121 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.

Michael Penix Jr., Washington QB (+375)

If there is a close second, it’s Penix Jr. Perhaps the Pac-12 Championship will be for all of the Heisman Trophy marbles. Penix Jr. has been very impressive this season, but he’s had an up and down second half of the year.

Still, he has the second shortest odds to win the award by season’s end. This year, he has 3,533 yards, 28 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 68% completion percentage.

Jayden Daniels, LSU QB (+400)

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

Daniels is a contender for the award based on his career year, but LSU does have three losses this season. That’ll probably be the biggest argument against the Tigers quarterback.

But there’s no question Daniels is playing out of his mind in 2023. What a way to go out. He has 3,164 yards, 30 touchdowns, four interceptions, a 71.4% completion percentage, 918 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns. The dual threat numbers are definitely eye-opening.

Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State WR (+550)

Joseph Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports

A lot of pundits point towards Harrison Jr. as the best player in college football, regardless of position. Well if that’s the case, shouldn’t he be the winner of the Heisman Trophy?

He is the player that truly makes Ohio State’s offense go. Good luck stopping him because you can only hope to contain him. This year, Harrison Jr. has 59 catches, 1,063 yards, 12 touchdowns and 18 yards per catch.

Brock Bowers, Georgia TE (+3,000)

Joshua L. Jones / USA TODAY NETWORK

Despite the injury that sidelined him for a few weeks, Bowers is still in contention for the award. Maybe an invite to New York if he has a strong end to the season?

When Bowers is healthy, he’s dominant. We just haven’t seen it as much in 2023. But in eight games, he has 44 catches for 601 yards, five touchdowns and 13.7 yards per catch.

Carson Beck, Georgia QB (+3,500)

Joshua L. Jones / USA TODAY NETWORK

Here’s a guy who’s gotten a little more buzz over recent weeks when Beck was thought of as the weak link on Georgia’s offense, he turned it around.

The Bulldogs are back to their dominant ways and have two Heisman contenders on the same offense. Great stuff. This year, Beck has 3,022 yards, 18 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 72.2% completion percentage.

Next set of contenders

Jalen Milroe, Alabama QB (+5,000)
Travis Hunter, Colorado WR/DB (+5,000)
Jordan Travis, Florida State QB (+6,000)
Quinn Ewers, Texas QB (+6,600)

Can this final set of contenders make a push towards the top? Maybe, but there’s little time left to make a huge move with a big favorite at the top.
