Multiple penalties were called in the second quarter of The Game between Michigan and Ohio State on Saturday, including one on a Wolverines assistant coach. The two teams got into a scuffle on the sidelines following a catch from Jeremiah Smith, who got knocked out of bounds on first down.

As Smith went out of bounds, he got pulled off the pile, which is when the two teams exchanged words. After the officials sorted everything out, they called unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on Ohio State running back Quinshon Judkins and a Michigan assistant. It was unclear which coach received the flag.

The penalties offset, and play continued. Ohio State later converted the fourth down to extend the drive, but not before quarterback Will Howard headed to the tent with an injury. However, he quickly returned.

Ohio State struck first in Saturday’s rivalry game, looking to snap a three-game losing streak. The Buckeyes got a field goal, but Howard threw a costly interception to set up a Kalel Mullings touchdown run to put Michigan on top, 7-3, in the second quarter.

Ohio State last lost three games in a row in the 1990s, and the Buckeyes are looking to snap that skid Saturday. It marks Ryan Day’s fifth Game, so he knows about the importance of the matchup and what it means to defeat “The Team Up North.”

However, he doesn’t want to focus too much on what happened in previous years. Day is trying to keep the Buckeyes in the moment, which will be key to controlling the emotions of the matchup.

“It’s like I said, what’s happened in the past has really nothing to do with what’s going on right now,” Day said. “The focus has to be on each other, and playing so hard for the love of your teammate — not so much what’s going on across the field. That’s what we’re gonna do, we’re gonna focus on that this week because it’s easy to get distracted with everything else.”
