Alabama commits shine with playoffs fast approaching

Most of the commitments in Alabama’s 2023 and 2024 classes are just mere days away from the start of their respective postseasons. For some, this will be their final time strapping up the pads at the high school level.

With the playoffs right around the corner, the Crimson Tide’s pledges stepped up to the plate this past week. One commit had a pair of interceptions, while several future Bama football players had multi-touchdown performances.

BamaInsider highlights the performances of Alabama’s commits and their teams from this past week.

It was a big Friday for several Alabama pledges

2023 Commitments (** Note: WR Cole Adams and TE Ty Lockwood are both out for the season due to injuries. RB Richard Young and Lehigh were on a bye this week.)

Bray Hubbard: Hubbard completed 14 of 24 passes for 232 yards and had two touchdowns in Ocean Springs’ 49-24 win over St. Martin to improve to 8-0 on the season. He also had 121 yards rushing and another score.

DB Caleb Downs: Downs rushed for a one-yard touchdown and had a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown. Mill Creek ended up winning their game over Collins Hill by a score of 54-0 to advance to 7-1 on the season.

K Conor Talty: Talty had a 41-yard field goal kick as St. Rita (7-2) defeated Niles Notre Dame 30-6.

QB Dylan Lonergan: According to AJC’s Stan Awtrey, Lonergan completed 19 of 35 passes for 222 yards and had one touchdown as well as one interception. Brookwood lost 14-42 to Grayson to fall to 4-4 on the season.

DL Edric Hill: North Kansas City lost 0-37 to Staley and has fallen to 5-4 on the season.

QB Eli Holstein: According to Patrick Wright of The Advocate, Holstein threw for 173 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a touchdown in Zachary’s (6-1) 42-28 victory over Central Baton Rouge.

DL Hunter Osborne: Per Loyd McIntosh of The Trussville Tribune, Osborne had a pass deflection in Hewitt-Trussville’s 45-14 victory over Chelsea. The Huskies are now 7-3 on the season.

DB Jahlil Hurley: According to AL.com, Hurley had a pair of interceptions and a couple of pass breakups. His second pick was taken 79 yards to the house as Florence (now 8-2) won 21-0 over Sparkman.

WR Jalen Hale: Per the Longview News-Journal, Hale hauled in five receptions for 162 yards and three touchdowns. Longview won 49-7 over McKinney North and the Lobos are now 8-0.

DL Jordan Renaud: Tyler Legacy suffered a 22-47 loss to Royse City to fall to 1-7 on the season.

RB Justice Haynes: According to Ken Chrzanowski of the Gwinnett Daily Post, Haynes rushed for 63 yards on six carries in the first half. He also scored two touchdowns in Buford’s (8-0) 50-7 win over Dacula.

LB Justin Jefferson: Jefferson had five total tackles (four assists, one solo) and two tackles for loss in Pearl River Community College’s 31-21 win over Southwest Mississippi C.C. The Wildcats are 5-3 this season.

WR Malik Benson: Benson caught four passes for 56 yards and a touchdown in Hutchinson Community College’s 65-7 victory over Garden City C.C. Hutch C.C. improved to 7-0 on the season.

OL Miles McVay: East St. Louis beat De Smet 40-10 to move to 7-2 on the year.

OL Olaus Alinen: Alinen and The Loomis Chaffee defeated Trinity-Pawling School 40-7 on Saturday. The Pelicans improved to 5-0 with that win.

OL Raymond Pulido: Apple Valley lost 27-41 to Oak Hills and had their six-game winning streak snapped. They’re now 7-2 on the season.

OL Ryqueze McElderry: Anniston (9-0) beat Cleburne County 42-0 at home on Friday night.

DB Tony Mitchell: Thompson suffered a 0-9 defeat to Hoover on Friday, and the Warriors are now 7-3 this season.

OL Wilkin Formby: Formby and Northridge secured a 28-14 win over Brookwood to make their record 6-3 on the year.

EDGE Yhonzae Pierre: Pierre had four solo tackles and an assist on Friday night. He also had the game-winning touchdown reception as time expired to give Eufaula (9-2) the 31-28 victory over Early County.

2024 Commitments (** Note: Jaylen Mbakwe recently suffered a knee sprain and will be out until the playoffs.)

WR Perry Thompson: Returning from an injury last week, Thompson caught six passes for 95 yards (almost 16 yards per reception), per AL.com. Foley defeated Daphne 34-7 to improve to 6-3 on the season.

TE Martavious Collins: Rome beat River Ridge 56-7 to move to 7-1 on the year.
