4-star DB Eric Winters returns to Auburn, plans to announce commitment soon

Four-star defensive back Eric Winters returned to Auburn on Saturday.

Winters, who attends Enterprise (Ala.) High School, was one of several elite recruits on campus to watch the Tigers’ A-Day scrimmage.

“It was pretty intense,” he said. “Defense was swarming around the ball. It’s a different type of energy around this place and somewhere a lot of people want to be.”

Winters said he was watching the safety and star positions, which is where Auburn is recruiting him to play.

“They were swarming around the ball, getting to the ball and making plays,” he said.

Winters has good relationships with Auburn coaches

Winters spent time during the day with Auburn defensive coordinator/linebackers coach DJ Durkin and safeties coach Charles Kelly.

He has a lot of respect for Kelly.

“That they want me here and they want to coach me,” he said. “They feel this is the best place for me. Something to really consider.

“(Kelly) has a good history and he puts a bunch of people in the league. It seems like he knows what he’s doing. I feel like I can trust him with my future and he can develop me into the player I want to be.”

Winters believes he is close to announcing a commitment. He said he’s seriously considering Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee and Miami.

“Honestly, it’s where I fit in, the environment and the people for me,” he said. “And from a parents point of view, where can you send your child off to that you know they can come back as a better man, better person in life.”

Winters has official visits set to Georgia (June 7-9) and Miami (June 21-23). A commitment, however, will come well before he takes those visits.

“My spring football starts April 22nd,” he said. “Before then. Somewhere around then.”

Winters doesn’t list a leader among his four schools.

“It’s pretty even,” he said.
