Auburn has added its second transfer defensive lineman of the class in Lawrence Johnson.

Johnson, a graduate transfer from Purdue, announced on Sunday that he will transfer to Auburn to finish his college career.

Johnson joins Maryland transfer defensive lineman Mosiah Nasili-Kite in Auburn’s class. Nasili-Kite committed to Auburn on Saturday.

Johnson and Nasili-Kite each have one year of eligibility.

Johnson started all 13 games for Purdue in 2022, totaling 28 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. In 37 career starts at Purdue, Johnson has 87 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

Johnson is the seventh transfer to commit and/or sign with Auburn, joining Nasili-Kite, LB DeMario Tolan, OT Gunner Britton, OT Dillon Wade, TE Rivaldo Fairweather and DE Elijah McAllister.

College football players have a 45-day window to enter the portal and find a new home. The window will close on Jan. 19 before reopening after spring for another 15-day window.

Once in the portal, players are allowed to speak with coaches at other programs about transferring. Players also can visit other schools.

Auburn is expected to hit the transfer portal hard over the next 45 days. First-year coach Hugh Freeze said as much in his opening press conference.

“In Year One, the portal will be a big priority,” Freeze said. “I do believe in building (the roster) with high school kids and filling it in with the portal. Can we do that in Year One? I’m not sure yet, so I would anticipate it being heavier towards the portal.”
