Kaiir Elam, Zachary Carter and Dameon Pierce aren’t the only Gators who have been “drafted” this year.

Florida football has started another new tradition under coach Billy Napier. The team is currently in the fifth phase of its offseason program, called Regimen. It’s a nine-week training block to get the players ready for fall camp.

Last week, the Gators had their inaugural “Regimen Draft” for 2022 summer workouts. The team had a blue-carpet event in the indoor practice facility, with some players even dressing up like it was draft day.

The players split into groups and were put on the clock as they made their selections. The team captains then announced the pick as they drafted their teams to compete with in summer workouts.

Florida running back Lorenzo Lingard Jr. was the first overall pick for the “Show Me My Opponent” team.

“I’m not going to give you all of our stuff,” Napier said when asked about the Regimen phase, “but essentially, to me, it’s where the team starts to develop. You’ve got a set of rookies who just showed up. Then you have a set of veterans that are in a position to lead.

“Summer creates leadership opportunities. There’s less time. The staff only has you eight hours, what are you doing with all that other time? We started and we’re off and running.”
