Looking Back on Cal's Presser on Friday

As Matthew Hays posted, Coach Calipari hosted a press conference Friday afternoon. In that conference, Cal touched on running schemes to “hide” players and “random plays.” Since it is a late November Sunday afternoon and Drew took the Dreamcast from the KSR compound, let’s revisit that presser for a moment.

– Coach said, “When you run plays, you’re trying to hide a guy or two. When you don’t have to hide one player on the court, the more random you can play, the better.”

– According to a story from Memphis outlet in 2009, Coach Cal learned a little about that from his days running point at Clarion. The article is a very positive account of the young “Johnny” Calipari and how his hard work and swagger made him a floor leader and point guard-coach in college. Obviously, this story was written before the Kentucky move (read the comments) but it is a great read for every Big Blue fan. I can’t help but smile at how the article begins:

Coach Joe DeGregorio tried to hide John Calipari. So he stuck him at the back of a 1-3-1 zone, under the basket, where he would avoid matching up against quicker players on the perimeter.

– On another note, this tweet made me laugh:

Why yes Robert, ‘Random Play,’ along with the ever popular ‘Whatever I Can Get’ were Facebook staples at one time. They were eventually phased out because the morally questionable descriptions made some users “uncomfortable.” The More You Know. Go Cats.
