Michigan State landed yet another commitment out of the June 9 visitor weekend, this time landing defensive back Syair Torrence of Syracuse (NY) Christian Brothers Academy on June 25. Torrence was at one time committed to the hometown program in Syracuse. He decommitted from the Orange on May 6.

Spartan cornerbacks coach Jim Salgado visited Torrence’s high school in April. Michigan State and Salgado extended an offer to the 5-foot-11, 185-pound defensive back shortly after. Torrence took his first visit to East Lansing as an official visit, on June 9.

“The visit was unbelievable,” Torrence previously told SpartanMag.com. “My parents and I enjoyed it all and my thoughts on Michigan State are very exciting. My favorite part was just being around the players and just vibing with them.”

Torrence and his parents also met with Mel Tucker, which stands out as a top takeaway from the official visit.

“Coach Tucker is a real cool person to be around,” Torrence said. “Seeing him communicate with my parents and having a good conversation with him was the best part about being on the visit.”

Torrence needed one more visit back to the hometown program in Syracuse, on June 16, before deciding he would pull the trigger on the Spartan offer. He announced his commitment via social media.

The three-star defensive back is ranked the No. 999 overall recruit, the No. 141 wide receiver, and the No. 7 recruit in New York by the 2024 On3 Industry Rankings.

Michigan State now holds seven commitments in the 2024 recruiting class. Over half of the class hails from the defensive backfield. Torrence joins cornerbacks Jaylen Thompson, of Murfreesboro (TN) and Camren Campbell of Tampa (FL), along with four-star safety Reggie Powers of Centerville (OH).

The Spartans also hold two commitments on the offensive line including three-stars Andrew Dennis, of Mount Pleasant (MI), and Logan Bennett of Balitmore (MD). The last member of the class joined the fold yesterday (June 24) landing four-star running back Anthony Carrie of Tampa (FL) Carrollwood Day.
