Michigan State got the ball rolling on its 2025 class when it landed California quarterback Leo Hannan on Monday. Spartan head coach Jonathan Smith and offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren quickly identified Hannan (6-4, 205) as a top target upon their arrival in East Lansing.

Lindgren offered the Long Beach (Calif.) Servite High School gunslinger in January during a live scouting of his throwing session. Hannan previously held an offer from Smith and company during their time at Oregon State.

Hannan took his first visit to Michigan State on Feb. 3, with his father.

Hannan held additional offers from Arkansas, Pittsburgh, Virginia and Minnesota, among others. A three-star prospect, Hannan is the No. 811 recruit in the 2025 class, per the On3 Industry Rankings. He is also the No. 49 quarterback and No. 62 player from California in his class.

What Hannan brings to Michigan State

SpartanMag recently caught up with respected California quarterback trainer Sam Fisher – founder of the Throw To Win quarterback development program – to talk about Hannan. Fisher has worked with Hannan, current Michigan State quarterback Aidan Chiles and countless other California quarterbacks.

“Leo checks off most boxes,” Fisher said. “The guy is 6-foot-4, 210-pounds. He runs really well, he throws a really good ball. What I love the most about Leo is his competitive nature. He loves to compete and is one of those guys who hates losing.

“He really likes to win and always gets after it. Leo doesn’t take reps off. He is always trying to get better and he’s the type of kid, with a 4.7 GPA, where football is going to take him a long way, but he would be successful without football. I think he will have an incredible career as a quarterback, but he will be a successful person at the end of the day, no matter what.”

While playing at Servite High School, Hannan not only faced the top competition in southern California, but the entire country. Servite’s league, the Trinity League, is home to powerhouse schools such as St. John’s Bosco and Mater Dei, among others.

“I think with Leo and all young quarterbacks, it’s just progressing and understanding what the defense is trying to do,” Fisher said, “I think him playing in the Trinity League, that is about as close as he’s going to get to playing collegiently. That is a top-of-the-food-chain conference that is one of the best in the country.

“He’s going against five-stars every week. He’s around killers all the time and I think you can only get better. Iron sharpens iron. I think he will be ready for the speed of the college game. I think it’s just like all quarterbacks, just understanding how to process the offense, get the playbook dialed-in and make your reads quick.”

Michigan State brought in two class of 2024 quarterbacks in Alessio Milivojevic and Ryland Jessee. Hannan will enroll in East Lansing in December 2024, looking to compete with the aforementioned 2024 quarterbacks to become the possible heir to Chiles in the years to come.
