Zack Marshall is ready to make his decision.

The three-star tight end out of Carlsbad (Calif.) High will announce his commitment on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET.

Marshall, who is ranked as the No. 36 athlete and No. 688 overall prospect nationally, per the On3 Consensus, recently released a Top 3 of Cal, Michigan and Utah.

Michigan just jumped in the mix for Marshall a few weeks ago after offering him during its annual BBQ at The Big House recruiting event. It was there that Marshall worked out in front of the staff and really moved the needle.

Here is a closer look at where things standing heading into the decision.

Why it will be Michigan

Michigan has all the momentum in this recruitment. While the Wolverines were relatively late to the party, they made a huge impression on him during his unofficial visit for the BBQ at The Big House. Marshall enjoyed working with new U-M tight ends coach Grant Newsome, and the two have quickly built up a bond. Marshall is a 4.0 student and values what Michigan can offer on and off the field. While Cal is also an elite school, Michigan boasts a superior football program. On top of that, the Wolverines have a strong track record of utilizing and developing the tight end position.

Why it won’t be Michigan

Distance would be the only negative box checked for Michigan. While Marshall has expressed a willingness to leave home, Cal is closer to home, and, as mentioned, can also offer an elite education. Utah gives him an opportunity to stay out West as well, and the Utes have been making some noise on the football field. All signs point to Michigan, but as everyone has seen in the past, recruits can get cold feet when it comes to picking a school across the country.

EJ’s Prediction

I don’t think distance will end up being a factor. I logged  an On3 recruiting prediction in favor of Michigan earlier this month and feel confident in that pick. The Wolverines hit a home run on his BBQ visit and offer the best of both worlds. It would be surprising if Marshall sided with one of the Pac-12 schools.
