Michigan football landed a Signing Day commitment from 2022 St. Frances Academy defensive lineman Derrick Moore after hosting the former Oklahoma commit on a visit the weekend before National Signing Day.

Moore had been committed to Oklahoma from July 2021 until late November, reopening his recruitment after Lincoln Riley departed for USC. Moore visited Ole Miss days ahead of arriving in Michigan for his visit, but the Wolverines ultimately landed the St. Frances lineman just days ahead of Signing Day.

Moore had been keyed in on Oklahoma prior to his July commitment and hadn’t made any visits outside of Norman prior to Riley’s departure. Since opening up his recruitment, he heard from the likes of Penn State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Georgia, Florida, Ohio State, Tennessee and USC, but ultimately committed to Michigan.

Standing 6-foot-4 and 250lbs, Moore projects to a variety of positions in Michigan’s defense either as an edge rusher or a down lineman in Mike Macdonald’s 3-4 scheme.

His best asset is his speed off the edge and though he’s not quite as tall as other Michigan edge rushers, he has adequate size to be an edge rusher in the Wolverines’ defensive scheme.

With the loss of Ethan Burke to Texas and the expectation that Kevonte Henry likely won’t be a member of Michigan’s class, the addition of Moore gives Michigan a talented edge rusher to make up for the losses.

Moore hails from the same high school as Blake Corum and Nikhai Hill-Green. Former St. Frances Academy head coach Biff Poggi is also on Michigan’s staff.

Here’s what The Wolverine’s EJ Holland thinks of Moore:

“Moore is an intriguing late addition that could fill multiple roles for the Wolverines. Right now, Moore is a bit of a tweener. In one scenario, he could add weight and be an athletic three-technique. In another scenario, Michigan could keep him at around what he’s at right now and use him as an edge rusher. While he doesn’t have ideal length there, he is very comfortable getting after quarterbacks. Either way, Moore is a high end prospect that Michigan will figure out what to do with. “

Moore ranks as the the No. 167 prospect per On3 and the No. 86 player in the country per the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is the 23rd commitment for Michigan football’s 2022 class.
