Dan Lanning’s coaching staff for the 2023 campaign continues to take shape, as the Ducks reportedly made a notable addition on Thursday.

According to On3’s Matt Zenitz, the Ducks are expected to hire veteran offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh in an assistant O-line role.

Cavanaugh, who has over 35 years of coaching experience, spent the past two seasons working as the offensive line coach at Arizona State.

With the Ducks, Cavanaugh will work under Oregon’s offensive line coach, A’Lique Terry, who was hired earlier this month. Terry’s addition to Lanning’s staff came after Adrian Klemm left the Oregon program to join the New England Patriot’s coaching staff.

Prior to his time in Tempe, Cavanaugh spent three seasons as the offensive line coach at Syracuse.

His resume also includes on-field roles at Nebraska (offensive line coach, 2015-17), Oregon State (offensive line coach, 2005-14), and Hawaii (offensive line coach, 1999-2004). Prior to his time at Hawaii, Cavanaugh made college coaching stops at Ferris State, Sacred Heart, Murray State, Alma College and Wesleyan College (Conn.).

From 1997-1998, Cavanaugh worked in the National Football League as an assistant offensive line and quality control coach with the San Diego Chargers.

Cavanaugh, who played at New Haven from 1981-82, began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Albany in 1986. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Southern Connecticut State the same year.

More on the hire of Oregon offensive line coach A’Lique Terry

A’Lique Terry, a former graduate assistant with the Ducks from 2019-20, returns to Eugene after spending last year on the Minnesota Vikings coaching staff. In Minnesota, he served as an assistant defensive line coach.

“We are thrilled to welcome A’lique back to the Oregon family,” Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. “A’lique is very familiar with our program and understands the values and goals that we have here in Eugene. He is passionate, with unique experiences that range from the college ranks all the way to the NFL as a coach. He also has experience as a player, competing at the Power 5 level on the offensive line.

“His relationships with our current and past student-athletes are unmatched, and his reputation as a teacher precedes him. We are really excited about what A’lique brings to our program and the positive impact he’ll have on our student-athletes both on and off the field.”

During his first stint with the Ducks, Terry worked with an offensive line group that was one of the best in the nation under Mario Cristobal and Alex Mirabal. In 2019, Terry worked with former Oregon standout Penei Sewell, a unanimous first-team All-American who won the Outland Trophy that season.

Former Ducks Shane Lemieux and Calvin Throckmorton also received All-American honors during Terry’s time in Eugene.
