Jackson, the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect in the 2023 class, announced nine days ago on Instagram that he was decommitting from North Carolina.

On July 8, On3’s Jamie Shaw entered an On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine pick for Jackson to flip from the Tar Heels to the Gamecocks. On July 13, he increased his confidence in that pick to 95 percent.

The 6-foot-9, 215-pounder initially committed to the Tar Heels on April 27 as part of the 2023 class, but Shaw reported on May 30 that Jackson may end up reclassifying to the 2022 class and then on July 3 that the reclassifying chatter had only intensified with South Carolina and the G-League as Jackson’s primary trending options.

In the time since then, and with the subsequent decommitment, the buzz about Jackson possibly playing for his hometown team has only intensified.

At this moment, Gamecock Central considers South Carolina to be the overwhelming favorite for Jackson, who would enroll as part of the 2022 class if the five-star did indeed pick the Gamecocks.

While Jackson would have to be re-ranked as a 2022 prospect, he is currently the No. 1 prospect for the 2023 class with On3, Rivals and 247Sports with ESPN ranking him the sixth-best prospect in that class.

Jackson is also ranked the top overall prospect in the 2023 class with a rating of 99.20 in the On3Consensus, which equally averages the rankings from all of the major recruiting services.

Prior to his initial commitment, Jackson took official visits to four official visits, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgetown, and Duke.
