Look, we know there’s talent in the South when it comes to football recruiting. But there’s something, just something about being able to go into the DMV area to land a recruit. For the third time this offseason South Carolina has been able to do just that landing another major commitment.

Four-star EDGE Desmond Umeozulu out of Upper Marlboro, Md. made it public on Monday that he’ll be a Gamecock. Rated as the consensus fourth overall prospect from the Crab Cake Capital of the World, he becomes the third highest commitment so far for Shane Beamer and USC.

Standing at 6-6, 239 pounds, Umeozulu is a long-limbed edge rusher whose burst and length allow him to consistently be in the backfield. What really stands out about his tape is that he uses his length and power so well for a high schooler. With a wingspan measuring of 6-8, he does a tremendous job of not getting held up by blockers at the line of scrimmage.

He chooses South Carolina over a long list of power five schools including Clemson, North Carolina, Ohio State, and Georgia.

With the Gamecocks still in the mix for five-star Nicolys Harbor, who is set to visit South Carolina on September 17, establishing a stronger pipeline in the DMV with a third commitment can only help their cause. Those other two commits so far being four-star offensive line Oluwatosin Babalade and three-star defensive back Zahbari Sandy.

South Carolina has now landed ten four-star commitments.

H.S. Scouting Summary via On3

Long-limbed edge rusher whose burst and length allow him to consistently terrorize offensive tackles on Friday nights. Solid hand usage. Rarely allows offensive lineman to get their hands on his chest. Quality bend and flexibility given his size. Measures in at a legitimate 6-foot-6, 200 pounds with a 6-foot-8 wingspan. Jumped an impressive 28.5-inch vertical and ran an electronically-timed 4.65 shuttle during the spring camp circuit prior to his senior season. Would like to see some development in his change of direction. Appears heavy-footed at times. High upside prospect due to size and functional athletic ability.
