The first national signing day for college football begins December 20 and runs through December 22. This series gives you the chance to familiarize yourself with the next class charged with keeping Texas in a position of national prominence.

To win at a consistently high level means stacking talented class after talented class. The top-five 2024 class does just that following top-five finishes in the 2022 and 2023 classes.

On the first national signing day, Inside Texas will offer profiles of each member of the 2024 signing class. Up next, Jerrick Gibson

The Player: Jerrick Gibson, RB, IMG Academy

The Rating: 93.99 (four-star)

The Ranking: Gibson is ranked ast the No. 86 overall prospect, the No. 5 running back, and the No. 14 prospect in Florida according to the On3 Industry Ranking. On3 ranks Gibson as the No. 171 overall prospect, the No. 13 running back, and the No. 22 prospect in Florida.

The Highlights:

The Recruitment: The Gainesville, Fla. native was once committed to the Gators but backed off that pledge in February of 2022. That coincides with when Tashard Choice arrived at Texas. Choice and Gibson had a relationship and the two continued to build it throughout the year. That continued into official visit season when Gibson took trips to Miami, Georgia, and Texas. He chose the Longhorns shortly thereafter, but the recruitment wasn’t done. He took a few more trips to Gainesville to see the Gators, but the Longhorns never wavered in their desire to add Gibson. Pair that with Florida’s lackluster season and Texas signed a two-back class the rest of the country is envious of.

The Projection: Gibson has some similar qualities to Texas running back Jonathon Brooks. He is very smooth with easy change of direction and plant-and-go ability, and is comfortable catching out of the backfield. He looks like he’d be very comfortable in outside zone, setting up his blockers before planting and cutting into the creases. He’s several burgers and lifts away from being a feature back but his frame and short area quickness suggest he could get there in time. – Ian Boyd

The Relationship: “I think we click so much because (Choice) has got a great personality, and electric energy around him. You can’t be sad around him. And I like how he keeps in touch with my family members to see how they are doing. They have a great relationship. And I like that. He’s going to make sure the family is straight, and you have got a bond before he recruits you.”

The Enrollment: Gibson is an early enrollee.

The Final Word: Thanks to previous relationships, Choice was able to go to IMG Academy and land one of the best backs in the nation at the expense of a SEC rival.
