Johnson, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound junior from Jacksonville, Fla., was honored for his 8.0-inning, two-hit outing versus Cal Poly on Friday. Johnson struck out eight and never allowed more than one batter to reach base during any individual inning in his outing.

Johnson’s game one start was part of a weekend where the Longhorns shut out the Mustangs over all three games, something the program has done just on one other occasion since 1971.

This is Johnson’s second career pitcher of the week honor.

Powell, a senior from Robinson, Texas, hit .471 over the week with three home runs and eight RBI. It is his first career weekly honor from the Big 12. Powell hit two homers against the Mustangs during the series finale as part of a career 4-for-5 day. He also added two extra base hits in the midweek win over the Houston Christian Huskies.

Texas Tech infielder TJ Pompey was named the league’s newcomer of the week.

Texas welcomes St. John’s to Austin on Tuesday before heading to Minute Maid Park in Houston as part of the Astros Foundation College Classic. The Longhorns will face LSU, Texas State, and Vanderbilt during the event.
