WeAreSC’s Erik McKinney, Greg Katz and Marc Kulkin give their 5 Things following USC’s 41-35 win against the California Golden Bears. The Trojans pushed their record to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play. The WeAreSC staffers pick their Player of the Game, Play of the Game, Expectation Met, Surprise, and Biggest Takeaway from this one.

Player of the Game

It was a sweep for a wide receiver who has made impacts the past three games after seeing an increased role in the offense. A couple of other offensive standouts received mention as well, including a star who is making excellence seem expected.

Play of the Game

An offensive explosion, a defensive lapse and two, yes two, onside kick recoveries are mentioned here. Wide receiver Michael Jackson III authored the game’s longest play from scrimmage on his explosive touchdown catch-and-run. This game also featured two onside kick attempts from Cal. A USC recovery helped seal the game for the Trojans. And a Cal recovery was part of back-to-back plays that really highlighted the way USC seemed to shut down the engine and coast to the finish line.

Expectation Met

The USC fans continue to show up admirably for a team that has guaranteed a winning season. The USC defense showed up in at least one positive way. And the USC offense showed up in a way that it has in nearly every game this season.

Surprise

USC running back Travis Dye received just 11 carries through three quarters. And Cal quarterback Jack Plummer threw for 406 yards after not throwing for more than 278 in any game this season. He also matched a season-high with three touchdown passes.

Biggest Takeaway

Friday should (SHOULD) provide another tune-up game for USC before the real tests come in back-to-back rivalry showdowns at the end of the season. Time is running out for the Trojans to fix their issues on defense. Alarm bells are ringing as USC struggled for a third-straight game on the defensive side of the ball.
