What friggen game are you watching.
Rangers can’t complete a pass
Me and you are watching different games apparently. Outside of about 10 minutes the rangers have totally dominated this game. Keep in mind devs have had 4 pp’s

Worst I've seen the Devils play all season.
Well its a different season now. Its the playoffs. Idk how many times we have to say playoff hockey and regular season hockey is apples and hand grenades.

Rangers basically rested the last month while devs went balls to the wall. Their style isnt really a playoff style

Most telling stat is Devils 4 PP and no shots on goal … (Rangers with 3 short handed shots ) Rangers giving up the body to block shots all over the ice

Expected goals for shows Devils ahead, Rangers burying their chances, Devils are not.

Meanwhile up in Toronto, Tampa up 6-2 on the Leafs after 2.

TBL got off to a 3-0 start. Toronto cuts it to 3-2, then promptly gives up 3 more.

This guy Keith Jones hates the Rangers
He’s an idiot, and my favorite example of his is idiocy tonight was when he gave credit to Ruff for putting the Fox Lindgren pair together on the Rangers, when the two had already been a pair for years in the US development program.

In other hockey news: Taylor Hall returned from LTIR just in time to suit up for the Bruins first game. Who'd a thunk it.

The league needs to Crack down on cap "avoidance".

Devils are not built for a rugged playoff series especially against the Rangers.
Defense is not physical enough ; too small and goaltending is average at best.

It’s over like I predicted

Rags in 5!
Glad you enjoyed it! Give the Rangers credit, they played a GREAT road game.

The Devils dealt with their nerves, by playing slower and more tentative. Still when you look at the totality of this game, it came down to special teams.

I'm trying to stay positive, so I will say the Devils start a winning streak in Game 2. This is why I picked them in 5.

If I'm wrong it is only because, you should go with your first instinct. If history holds, this is a damned if they do, damned if they don't thing.
Oh well 😆, at least Tampa Bay beat Toronto.

Taylor Hall 😆. I'm still waiting for the NHL to give someone, anyone, the NJD penalty for signing our own player (at the time) Ilya Kovalupchuk. I have a feeling, this will be a long time coming.

NHL Justice is oxymoronic, totally nonexistent!

realistically the rangers (outside of brain dead kandre) just went into lock down mode after they dominated the first 2. 2 goal lead with igor in net vs vitek will be tough to overcome

Yes it is tough. However the Devils played their D level game. If the Devils play their A game, they can come back and beat most, if not all teams.

That said, this is why I wanted another opponent in the first round. The NYR are too good defensively, and too experienced, if we are not on our game. Which is tough, with inexperience.

All that said when Lindgren scores a goal scorers goal, Patty Kane would have been happy with in his prime, it is your night. As soon as it was 3-0, I knew my team lost.

As a Rangers fan, thrilled with the result obviously. Strong playoff defense, great penalty kill, and Igor was what we need him to be. But I’m still very concerned about our ability to manage the puck. Gallant said in his post game presser that “they managed the puck well” and I’m still trying to understand what he was referring to.

The Devils flashed at times. We’ll see how this series progresses. I’m not confident.

Kandre is brain dead. That turnover that lead to the hughes penalty shot was jaw droppingly bad

The crazy thing is the punishment wasn't even for a contract that was ever even in effect--it was for the initial deal they had, which the NHL rejected. I don't know how you can justify issuing such a punishment for circumventing the cap--how can a contract that was never in effect circumvent the cap? Now it is becoming commonplace for teams that are right up against the cap to LTIR guys until the playoffs and the league pretends it's a coincidence that these guys get healthy just as the salary cap no longer exists.

As for tonight's game--the Devils also looked like garbage in Game 1 against the Rangers in 2012. Obviously you'd like to start with a win or at least a closer game, but it's not time to panic, the series is just 1-0.

Spot on! I found it funny to try and forecast, what if anything, can another team do, to get a Devil-like penalty. Last year the Lighting did it, this year the Bruins. It is comical, at this point.

As for the game, thank goodness this happened in game 1. The Rangers played the perfect road game, showing their experience. The Devils hopefully got all the jitters out. When Ryan Lindgren scores a highlight reel goal like that, you know it is a New York night. It will be interesting to see the team's reaction in Game 2.

As a Ranger fan I was of course happy with the result, special teams and goaltending, and for the most part the defensemen. However, there were some worrying signs.

-the Rangers bottom six had some nice stretches of possession in the Devils end, the top six did nothing at 5v5 short of the Tarasenko goals.

-Miller had several of his brain farts, Mikkola played well but had his lack of speed exposed a few times and Schneider’s play was uneven. The Devils should be getting more done against the Rangers’ third pair.

The Rangers made some really bad center ice turnovers that turned into dangerous Devil rushes that were bailed out by good play by the Rangers D.

To me, the Devils biggest worry is the goaltending battle, and that the Rangers won with Shesterkin playing well but not pushed anywhere near his limit. There might be a game coming where the Devils play better and Shesty just steals it.

The devs in 2012 were a veteran bunch. These kids are puppies and softer than baby ****. They were totally rattled last night

They definitely weren't themselves last night. Credit to the rangers for the way they played, but the devils have much more in them than we saw last night. Will be interesting to see what adjustments are made for game 2.

It’s the playoffs. Drury built the team for the playoffs, devs are a rush based small team built for the regular season.

I still think rangers in 6 as devs should grab two but we’ll see

If im the devs this offseason im moving bratt for assets and at least getting something for him as he wont sign long term.

Sign tyler bertuzzi and also sign hathaway.

They really need to solve goalie too. I know alot of people think vanecek is a good goalie but hes not. Near the very bottom of nhl starters in goals saved above expected.

Agree that vanecek isn't a top tier goalie. I look at him like keumper in Colorado last year. You can win a cup with him, but he's not carrying you there.

Meier was a good pickup and pays physical, but the devils will win or lose with their speed and skill.

I shouldn't, but I take some comfort that 6 of 8 home teams lost game 1. There is a lot of hockey still to be played, but the devils better figure things out for game 2.

As my dad used to say “don’t get gay”
The Devils had 50 clean zone entries compared to 29 by the Rangers and doubled us in zone time.
Kane is a top 6 statue who can’t defend or attack anymore 5 on 5.
It’s nothing but one game.
We blew out Tampa Bay last year game one and paid the price for spending most the series in our own end.
You described the Devils, here’s my take on the Rangers.
They are an opportunistic counter attacking team that must take advantage of their chances, get strong goaltending and withstand extended periods of time where they go 8 or 9 minutes without being able to execute a clean breakout.
Personally:
I think counter attacking, opportunistic teams are not built for the playoffs.
The one wild card is the goalie.
They can win it by themselves.
Igor could do that

You go up 2-0 early and have igor in net and you change your style. Its not complicated. This game was never once in doubt.

We began to dump and chase and rightfully so.

Change your style?
If you go up 2, it should make for less clean zone entries not more.
Doubled us in zone time and entries.
You sound like Gallant.
Those numbers are a recipe to lose.

Yes we were.
Explain the doubled Zone time and going 18 minutes with 2 shots.
The last ten minutes of first period and first 8 of the second we had 2 shots on goal.
You call that total dominance

It am now convinced that Gerard Gallant watches a completely different game then the rest of us.

He said after the game “the good thing is that we kept the puck in their end, and kept it out of our end”.

How could he possibly have that takeaway from last night’s game???

I said something like this earlier. I watched his post game presser and had the same thought. I wish I could just say it’s coachspeak and he never really says anything of substance, but maybe there actually is no substance there at all.
