USC has faced some tests these past few weeks, escaping games against Colorado and the two Arizona schools with wins. Saturday could be their biggest of the season thus far — at least from a talent perspective — facing off against Notre Dame. A rivalry game with massive implications for both sides halfway through the 2023 season.

Lincoln Riley was asked what some of the challenges USC will face against Notre Dame, first stating how good of a team they are. Marcus Freeman has put together a well-balanced roster, showing flashes offensively and defensively. There could be multiple different ways the Irish find a way to pull out a win.

“They’re a good team,” Riley said. “You’re playing a good team at their place. They’re a complete team. They’re very experienced in a lot of key areas and they’ve played in some big games already. It’s a good football team, well-coached football team.”

Riley is correct about Notre Dame already playing in some big games. In fact, the last three matchups have been emotional ones for the Irish, coming out on top just once vs. Duke. Ohio State presented heartbreak while Louisville handled business on Saturday.

USC will have to show some mental toughness if they are going to leave South Bend and still have an undefeated record. Playing a road game in general will test your ability. Add in facing off against a rival and weird weather conditions — Riley will learn about his team on Saturday.

“You got to handle all parts of this,” Riley said. “We’ve talked a lot about the road. You got the handle the intensity and embrace the intensity and the excitement of this game and still settle in and go play great ball. Got to handle the elements — whatever the weather does present. There will be a lot of fun, unique challenges. But that’s a rivalry game, what it should be like.”

Notre Dame Stadium passed the prime-time test a few weeks ago with Ohio State in town. Fans showed up and created an incredible atmosphere for the players. The on-field result may have not been what they wanted but a great weekend overall.

USC coming to town could have the same effect, even if the weather is projected to be an issue. Riley needs to have his team prepared to play in front of a crowd trying its best to intimidate the Trojans on every snap.
