this would have happened whether gene did his dumb presser or not, so what's the big deal? if the outcome is we settle with tang for something < $18m, and then gene looks bad in the process and is also fired sometime after the next coach is hired, who cares?

And yet there are people on this board who continue to act as if Gene is a good AD. He should not work another day for this University and it is a MASSIVE mistake if he's allowed to hire the next head coach.

This was always going to happen if they went this route, it's a game of chicken now in finding a number.

But there is a downside here which is why it is key for Gene to know what the F he is doing.....and he messed up in the very first few minutes of the process. I don't have a bone to pick with Gene. Believe it or not I actually want him to do well. It's good for KSU if he does. But I also am going to call a spade a spade and when he continues to F up I'm going to point it outthere is little chance we pay more than $18m, but i realize you're a dog with a bone on this one so go off king

This was our only play to try and get that buyout reduced. If it doesn't work, fine. We gave it a shot.
Gene likely gets fired for bumbling it.
Linton probably gets dragged for some shit in discovery and maybe gets outed.
Seems to me like this solves a lot of problems for the low, low price of $18M + legal fees.

The 11th clause of his contract is pretty interesting... I think a reasonable argument could be made about his comments, followed by the public threat of a punishment practice could violate it. In today's world, with such a focus on student athlete mental health, having your coach say you are an embarrassment and it being broadcast all over social media is at least a contractual argument that could be made. You could argue it jeapordizes their mental state and also future opportunities. I'm not saying it's rock solid, but with that specific language, I think it can be contractually argued.
Kansas State head coach must be “engaging in — and actively monitoring to ensure the program’s coaches and employees are engaging in — fair, safe, and responsible treatment of the team’s student-athletes and avoiding behavior, actions, and activities that could jeopardize a student-athlete’s welfare, health, or safety,”
