RIP Doug Moe Back in the day Doug, Larry Brown then George Carl were quite the Carolina Mafia in NBA coaching. And I mean that in a good way

My understanding is one of Dean Smith's tasks as an assistant coach was escorting Moe to class to ensure he got there. I'm not sure how successful Coach Smith was with the tough assignment. Doug Moe was an all-time great character. RIP.

He and Billy Cunningham were both Erasmus High School (Brooklyn) graduates. The article that Rell posted notes that the Kangaroo Kid is only Tar Heel to top Moe's 10.6 career rebounding mark. Pretty good tandem from Erasmus.

Great player, especially on D. He shut down Heyman in the Dixie Classic. Got hosed because he didnt rat on Lou Brown's role in the Scandal. Black listed by NBA

Father Time marches on. If folks remember Bo Lamar, the scoring machine from Southwestern Louisiana in the 70s, he died yesterday

He was a team mate of Rick Barry's for the New Orleans team that won an ABA title ( as was Larry Brown). Barry, not one to give out praise lightly, said Doug was as good a defensive player as Dave Debusschere. That last Carolina that Moe was on could have made some noise in the NCAAT if not for the betting scandal.

RIP. Btw, this is the best Doug Moe comment ever: The problem arose once he was asked the question, because Denver Nuggets Coach Doug Moe never has dodged a touchy subject in his NBA career. So his response to whether Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was deserving to play in Sunday's 39th All-Star Game wasn't that much of a surprise."Somebody asked me if I think Kareem should be on the All-Star team for sentimental reasons," Moe said. "Kareem would be the last guy you'd pick for sentimental reasons. Here's a guy who has been pretty much a jerk almost his entire life. He's been one of the least-liked guys in NBA history by the fans, media, the players. "If one time or another, you've ticked off everybody in basketball, how . . . are you supposed to get a sentimental vote?" NUGGETS' MOE ISN'T FEELING SENTIMENTAL ABOUT KAREEM – Deseret News

Sad news. He was my late mom's favorite player when she was young.
