Jason Beck is wayyyy more impressive than I initially thought

So I must admit I saw the run numbers and passing numbers and got a little “meh” about the idea. I have now watched Utah vs Kansas, Wyoming, UCLA and Cincinnati. It took me until the Cincinnati game to come to the determination that it is a personnel issue as to why the passing game isn’t putting up the numbers. In every game but Cincinnati there was a lot of RPO’s, quick passes and not a lot of pocket passing, 3 step or 5 stop drops, or shot plays for that matter. But oh man. If Bryce wanted to watch a game and be like “Okay, I see the vision and I can get behind this!” He needs to watch the Cincinnati game. First off, the run game is elite. The blocking is fantastic and I REALLY hope we get Jim Harding to come along. The amount of motion, misdirection, pulling, and just overall scheming in the run game is IMPRESSIVE! They use wildcat, two RB’s, 2 RB’s and 2 QB’s, so much eye candy and window dressing putting defenses in constant conflict. This Cincinnati game that I will include the link to below shows the pass game I wasn’t sure if Beck had in his playbook. This offense ran 83 plays! Took several shots and Dampier left some big plays on the table even. Dampier in some of the other games really struggled from the pocket. He was widely inconsistent, but this game has me excited! Great passing schemes and a lot to be excited about! I went from thinking it was pretty unknown as to what the pass game could look like to being excited because I actually saw a game of what it could look like. Check it out!
@NotTom @MRSharkFB this would be a game I highly recommend checking out the All 22 for. I think you may be more excited than you have been on some of your initial watches.

I just am not sure what excites you is exactly what is going to excite Bryce. Not sure he is looking for all kinds of RPO's and QB runs as you might be. He is looking for a ticket to the NFL not running the ball a ton. I think DeBoer's offense is much more what he would like. He wants to win but he wants to throw the ball in a system that prepares you for the NFL. So far in 3 years there is nothing in Becks passing offense that shows you that.

That can get you to the NFL just fine. There is no more “college” offense than Lane Kiffin and Dart, before the injury, was doing just fine. There are countless others too.

Thanks for your breakdown, I'll have to give this game a watch! With that being said, is there anything that gives you cause for concern when it comes to scheme in the games you have watched?

Watched Aaron Rodgers throw about 12-15 different RPO variants in a game a few weeks ago. The “college” stuff is in the NFL and will continue to be.

If that’s the case than good luck Bryce, because he’s not going to be given the job anywhere else and he needs to grow tremendously this offseason to get on the field. We all watched him last year and despite the clown show Sherrone was, he wasn’t ready. I don’t remember a player so esteemed after such an average freshman campaign. The generational talent stuff is at prove it time and maybe he will but he’s going to have to earn all of it.

The majority of passing was RPO in other games. Dampier really struggles from the pocket so he just didn’t call much of it. Which made me wonder if it was just a “my guy can’t do this so I don’t call it or it’s just not a part of my offense”. Since he’s really young as a coordinator and this is just his 3rd season with his 3rd team.

I mean, I can agree to a small extent, but that’s why I was excited to see this game. There was a lot of “Bryce offense” that I hadn’t seen from Beck. Beck and Whittingham for that matter have always said they’ll cater the offense to their talent. It was clear Dampier was not capable of running a ton of that offense. So I wasn’t sure if it was a “I don’t call this because my QB can’t do it or a it’s not a part of my offense” thing. Seeing this game showed me that it was a personnel thing and it is a part of his offense. That tells me he will use the QB run game and RPO because that’s the base of his offense (and something Bryce is really good at) but he will also use the pocket passing, vertical passing game and all of the “DeBoer things”.

I think he just wasn’t being developed. If he’s developed I think it improves tremendously. It appears Beck is up on the booth so it will be on Detmer (which sounds like he’s coming) to help Bryce during the game face to face.

Yes, his arm talent is obvious, as is his athleticism, now he needs to learn to be a QB

After watching all those games I would love for Parker their RB to come. Man is he explosive! A combo of Marshall, Hiter and Parker would be elite. He’s explosive like Haynes. Looks faster than Haynes.

I’d assume for Parker to come, Haynes would need to go to the NFL.

Sherrone failed him. Bryce’s development was most affected by the yo-yo game planning all season. Some games Chip called the shots and it was in Bryce’s wheelhouse. Some games Sherrone turtled. Bryce was never able to build on the game before. He never got into a rhythm. Progress is not linear but Michigan created massive peaks and valleys on its own by lacking any sort of consistent philosophy on offense.

So why did he come to Michigan then? Not like we’ve been lighting up the passing numbers under Sherrone or Harbaugh.
