Emotions ran high among Tar Heel fans on Friday, and for good reason. Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd, one of UNC’s top candidates for its vacant head coaching position, withdrew his name from consideration upon signing a new five-year contract extension with Arizona. We reported this yesterday, but I want to reiterate intel that while UNC may have been in negotiations with Lloyd’s representatives, an official offer had not been extended. A source also shared that UNC was not surprised that Lloyd ultimately decided to stay in Tucson. Note the CBS Sports report that Lloyd’s deal included a clause that he will now report to Arizona president Suresh Garimella instead of athletic director Desireé Reed-Francois.
As we’ve shared previously this week, this remains a fluid coaching search. The coaching search hot board remains an accurate resource, confirmed by sources, and we will continue to monitor and update the board as new information warrants a change. I’d also recommend re-reading our scoop from Friday, which has a lot of good detail that remains relevant today.

I just want to know if we've had any real discussions with Donovan or if he truly is waiting until 4/12 to even engage in conversations. I haven't been able to find a firm answer on that, but if it's the latter, we need to move on to McCasland/Byington/McCollum.

The top tier of candidates included Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd, Michigan’s Dusty May and Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan, although Lloyd’s decision on Friday removed his name from consideration. With UNC’s three primary candidates still coaching prior to Friday’s announcement, the lack of developments this week was not a surprise, given UNC’s commitment to the long game. That being said, there are multiple sources and sufficient intel to confirm that UNC’s search process has maintained contact with candidates beyond just that trio. That’s especially relevant now given Lloyd’s exit from the coaching board." https://www.on3.com/teams/north-carolina-tar-heels/news/scoop-uncs-coaching-search-reaches-final-four-weekend/Who is the current top target?

In the Friday scoop, when you say UNC is willing to wait until April 12 for Donovan, is it your sense they would wait that long to even announce him or just for him to start working after locking him up earlier? Or is that not clear at this point?

Appreciate the sourced reporting. Feels like the admin is doing everything possible to keep the search quiet and deliberate. However, it feels like the order here is 1) Lloyd 2) May 3) Anybody's guess from other candidates on the board

@GregBarnes Do you sense any panic within the search leadership or do they still seem confident?

i think it's donovan, chicago has been getting hammered lately by 30 and 40 ... and while some see that as a red flag i would caution that approach because donovan would be given the keys to build a roster how he saw fit vs. the limitations the bulls gave him ... he also brings instant cred in terms of college succession and nba experience

So we’re gonna wait until the 12th to negotiate with Donovan. That sounds like a terrible idea

So UNC is 10+ days without a coach and hasn’t extended an offer? That’s… alarming

Sounds like a great situation to be in!
