Ryan Barker Appreciation Thread

Yeah, it’s a shame this team seriously underperformed but this guy has been EXCELLENT all season. So much has gone wrong this season that I’m sure you’ve forgotten how unsteady this team was at kicker for the past few seasons. Bravo, Ryan Barker!

I think he's the best kicker in PSU history. There were bigger name guys, and guy with bigger legs, but Barker is the most accurate and clutch by far. Sucks he doesn't have a bigger leg or he'd have an NFL career.

Who knows those NFL kicking balls seem to add 10 yards to their max range. Kid still might make it.

Barker was looking like the MVP of the Pinstripe Bowl in the Third Quarter, when it was 9-3 Lions. He was money., and I think he made himself some money today.

I think his season FG% of 0.95 is the PSU record. Tony B. is right. The only thing he lacks is the Chris Bahr/Jordan Stout range beyond 50 yards.

Just my opinion, but I think his range is fine. Those upper 40’s he hit had at least another 8-10 yards on them.

My BiL was talking to Chris Bahr and he said the NFL kicking balls are the reason for longer field goals.

His range is into the 50s, but he hasn't been asked to kick them. He estimated 54/55 earlier this season, depending on conditions. The block against FIU was from 53, but it didn't look to be a trajectory issue. Just a protection breakdown from Onoh on the right side. https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/news/penn-state-kicker-ryan-barker-confident-in-return-to-los-angeles/

He needs to be back, and he needs to finish his career here. We have to make it happen. You do not find consistent kickers like this in college often, he has already won us games. Pay him, and then I want to see him become an Philadelphia Eagle after Elliott.

Thanks! I was going by his stats on the PSU web site. Campbell needs to keep this guy around. He'll win us a few games before he's done.

It’s been addressed above, but he seems to have plenty of leg to me. Even when asked to kickoff the one game this season, they went into the end zone. I’m guessing it’s instead been a CJF analytics issue in that he hasn’t been asked to kick beyond 50.

For perspective… Barker is tied with New Mexico’s Luke Drzewiecki for highest FG Pct (.947) in the nation this season. They are both 18 for 19. For his career, Barker is now 33 for 37. Through two years of eligibility, he’s PSU’s all-time most accurate kicker. His .892 career FG pct is is 9.6 pts higher than Penn State’s second most accurate kicker in history, Tyler Davis (min 20 attempts). He’d have to:
  • Miss 18 of his next 24 FGAs to match Robbie Gould’s and Matt Bahr’s careers
  • Miss 15 of his next 22 FGAs to match Massimo Manca’s career
  • Miss of 17 of his next 38 FGAs to match Sam Ficken’s career
  • Miss 12 of his next 24 FGAs to match Brett Conway’s career
  • Miss 7 of his next 12 FGAs to match Nick Gancitano’s career
  • Miss 6 of his next 12 FGAs to match Tyler Davis’s career
  • Miss 14 of his next 30 FGAs to match Jake Pinegar’s career
  • Miss 26 of his next 43 FGAs to match Craig Fayak’s career
* I could not find Chris Bahr’s college stats ** Kevin Kelly was 78 for 107, .729. There’s no sense doing the above math on Kelly’s career as Barker will never get close to 107 FGAs.
