Northwestern lands TE Wyatt Frey as first 2027 commitment

Northwestern was the first offer for 2027 tight end Wyatt Frey. Now, the 6-foot-5, 215-pounder from Red Cloud (Neb.) Lawrence-Nelson is the first member of the Wildcats’ Class of 2027.
Frey, who earned his offer in June after a camp, visited Northwestern for the Michigan game at Wrigley Field on Saturday. That appears to have been enough for Frey to end his recruitment, as he announced his decision on X on Tuesday morning.
Frey is an interesting commitment for the Wildcats in many ways. He’s from Nebraska, a state where Northwestern doesn’t pull many recruits from the clutches of the Huskers. He also plays eight-man football in the small town of Red Cloud, which has a population of less than 1,000.
Most notably, Frey plays quarterback and safety for Lawrence-Nelson and showed up at Northwestern’s camp expecting to throw footballs as a quarterback instead of catch them as a tight end. But he did well enough to earn an offer and is now a Wildcat.
Northwestern remained his only offer, but he was being recruited by Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Penn State, Wisconsin and Tulsa, among others.
Frey is an intriguing jumbo athlete who has put up some impressive measurables considering his size. He boasts a 4.7 40-yard dash and has run an 11.78 100 meters. He has also long jumped 20-feet, 8-inches and has an 81-inch wingspan.
Another number that no doubt helped make him a Wildcat is his reported 3.8 GPA.
As you might expect, Frey was dominant in Nebraska Class D2, where he led Lawrence-Nelson to the quarterfinals before losing to Howells-Dodge 30-8. In a wild 78-42 second-round playoff win over Elmwood-Murdock, Frey rushed for 272 yards and seven touchdowns, went 6-for-7 passing for 80 yards and one score, and then on defense intercepted two passes, including a pick-6, for nine total TDs.
He figures to add some versatility, speed and explosiveness to offensive coordinator Zach Lujan‘s system, which favors employing at least two tight ends in most of its sets.
Frey told WildcatReport back in July what he expects to bring to the Northwestern program.
“I bring a lot of athleticism [to the table] and I’m coachable. If you tell me something to do, I’ll go do it. Don’t care what it is.”
Frey is not yet ranked as a prospect by Rivals.
