Four-star wide receiver Malcolm Simmons of Alexander City (Ala.) Benjamin Russell signed his National Letter of Intent with Auburn on Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period.

The Simmons File

Position: Wide receiver

Height/Weight: 6-0 / 170 pounds

Notable trait/Auburn fit: Simmons is one of the best pure athletes in the country. He has played wide receiver, running back, quarterback, safety, corner, linebacker, and even punts (and punts well). He could be a wildcard when it comes to position at Auburn.

On3 Industry Ranking: (91.42) No. 201 overall, No. 34 WR, No. 12 in Alabama

Commitment date: July 29, 2023

Chose Auburn over: Arkansas, UCF

Time of enrollment: May

Notable: Simmons not only plays almost every skill position available, he is a big time basketball player. Simmons has been seen throwing the ball off of the backboard to himself during games. He is a highlight reel. Simmons was the first of two big commitments during Auburn’s Big Cat Weekend event.

Quoteworthy: “Me and my other guys, seeing what we can change from the Iron Bowl and making that not happen again. When we get up here it will change and we will win some national championships and SEC Championships.”

Breakdown/In-person evaluation

**In-person eval and breakdown written by Auburn Live Recruiting Analyst Cole Pinkston

— Simmons played out wide and the ball was kept away from him in the first half. After his non-fake punt (Simmons tells me a fake was not called), the defense started to double him, just as we saw with Perry Thompson a week ago. Simmons’ ability was well-respected and for good reason.

— Simmons took matters into his own hands in the second half. He pulled a punt down (he is the punter, and a very good one) and took off. It was an impressive play. Auburn Live videoed the play, but started it late. Simmons made a couple of tacklers miss before the video started.

— Simmons was the best when the ball was in his hands. He is not overly effective yet when the ball is not in his hands. Unlike Bryce Cain a week ago, Simmons is not an advanced route runner.

— Simmons’ best play of the night came from a scramble drill in the end zone. Simmons realized quickly that his quarterback had no options. So, he came back to the quarterback, but juked out the defender in the process. He made a toe-tap catch coming back down to the front pylon. It was an impressive play altogether.

— There were two times that Simmons flashed serious speed: Once on an onside kick attempt and another on defense. Simmons has elite burst and can get to top speed very quickly. He is a 4-star talent without question, he just has not been able to open things up yet. His best football is definitely ahead of him, and that is a good thing.
