New On3 Recruiting Prediction: Tigers a serious threat to land 5-star WR Cam Coleman

When it comes to receiver recruiting at Phenix City (Ala.) Central, Auburn hasn’t had much luck in recent years, but the recruitment of Cam Coleman could change that. “Could” is the key word here.

In recent years, Auburn missed on Central receiver standouts Justyn Ross and E.J. Williams; both picked Clemson.

During the last cycle, the Tigers appeared poised to land 4-star Central receiver Karmello English. He committed to Auburn last summer, only to later de-commit. Rumors swirled he had grade issues, but English ended up signing with Michigan — a school not known for signing academic risks. Whatever truly happened with regards to that recruitment, the fact is the talented English ended up elsewhere.

So now comes Coleman, a 5-star prospect and the No. 20 overall recruit for On3.

Coleman has all the tools to be a special player

He’s tall (6-foot-3.5). He’s fast. He can jump (40-inch vertical). And most important, Auburn really wants him.

Not long after the Tigers hired Marcus Davis as receivers coach earlier this year, his first offer went to Coleman. “On coach (Marcus) Davis‘ first day (at Auburn), he introduced himself to me and we’ve been in contact ever since,” Coleman told On3. “They have a lot of experience with Auburn and across the NFL and college football.”

Whatever Auburn is doing in this recruitment, it seems to be working as the heavily offered player continues to speak highly of Hugh Freeze’s program.

“They’re one of my top schools most definitely,” Coleman said. “Close to home, I love the atmosphere. It feels like home every time I go there.”

To our knowledge, Coleman has yet to visit Auburn this calendar year. However, it’s a place he has been to before and he plans to be back on campus this spring.

Freeze is known to like big receivers. That won’t hurt.

Behind the scenes, we’ve learned Coleman speaks highly about Auburn to those around him. That’s not a bad thing, either. The program is said to be optimistic here.

This recruitment is far from over. Alabama and Clemson are involved. Georgia, too. You can’t count any of them out. Others also are in pursuit. But right now, Auburn appears to be in as strong of a spot as anyone. Perhaps even the best spot.

For these reasons, I’ve put in a pick for Auburn to land Coleman in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, but with a fairly mild confidence level. For that confidence to rise, we’ll need more feedback and more intel after he visits Auburn again.

To be sure, there is much to shake out in this recruitment.

But right now, I like Auburn’s position.
