Georgia’s down a commitment in the Class of 2023, as four-star defensive back Kayin Lee of Ellenwood, Georgia’s Cedar Grove High School announced his decommitment from the Bulldogs on Tuesday.

He issued the decommitment via a graphic on social media, in which he said:

“First I would like to thank everyone at the University of Georgia for the opportunity that I’ve been blessed with! I would love to thank the staff for all the love that they have shown me and my family. After talks with God and my family, I’ve decided to decommit from the University of Georgia. I know that God will show me where to go and where my future will lead me. – Kayin Lee”

He had been committed since late September.

Lee is the nation’s No. 117 overall player for the Class of 2023, the No. 12 overall cornerback, and No. 11 player in Georgia according to the On3 Consensus.

His decommitment brings Georgia down to eight commits for the 2023 cycle.

Kayin Lee recently visited Athens

“It felt like I needed to be there,” Lee told On3’s Jeremy Johnson after a trip to Athens in January . “It felt pretty awesome getting to meet more of the coaching staff and getting to build more of a bond.”

He also mentioned that schools such as Auburn, Tennessee, Cincinnati and Ohio State continued to recruit him heavily.

Georgia’s new defensive backs coach

While Lee did not imply that a shakeup at his position led to the decommitment, it is fair to wonder.

Former Georgia defensive backs coach Jahmile Addae, who Lee committed to in late September, is now in Miami in the same role.

In his place is now former Rutgers defensive backs coach Fran Brown, who was officially hired last Friday.

DawgsHQ beat writer Palmer Thombs broke down Brown’s recent successes:

“Brown spent the last two seasons on staff under Greg Schiano at Rutgers, coaching defensive backs in his home state of New Jersey. The Scarlet Knights gained 19 turnovers in his first year with them in 2020, including eight interceptions, picking off a pass in each of the last four games including two against both Maryland and Nebraska. The turnover number was most in a season since 2012 and 10 more than they forced the previous year. Cornerback Tre Avery earned Third-Team All-Big Ten honors while safeties Christian Izien and Brendon White and cornerback Avery Young all were honorable mentions. In 2021, the number of turnovers decreased slightly to 17, seven of which were interceptions including a pick-six against Temple in the season-opener. The Scarlet Knights intercepted multiple passes in the win over the Owls along with their win over Indiana.”
