Jeff Brohm emerges as 'strong candidate' in Michigan search

The coaching carousel has not stopped spinning yet. Jon Sumrall (Florida) and Bob Chesney (James Madison) have officially moved on after their teams bowed out in the College Football Playoff on Saturday. But another opening still looms large. Just what is going to happen at Michigan after top reported targets Kalen DeBoer and Kenny Dillingham appeared to come of the table over the weekend?

It appears that Michigan director of athletics Warde Manuel has found a new top target. Could Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm make a return to the Big Ten?

“Louisville’s Jeff Brohm has surfaced as a strong candidate now after Michigan moves on from DeBoer, whose Alabama team beat Oklahoma yesterday to essentially remove him from the running,” The Wolverine’s Chris Balas writes. “As reported, Michigan was prepared to do ‘whatever it took’ to land him … but as of now doesn’t appear willing to wait that long.”

Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz has also had his named involved in this search but he officially poached Michigan offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey away for the same position in Columbia. That would seem to indicate that a move to Michigan is not happening. Elsewhere, interim head coach Biff Poggi, Washington head coach Jedd Fisch, and retiring Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham have also been mentioned as candidates. However, the clock is ticking fast with the transfer portal window now less than two weeks away.

Louisville is currently on site for the Boca Raton Bowl as the Card prepare to face Toledo with an interim head coach after Jason Candle left for UConn. Could the same happen if Brohm takes the Michigan job? That game will be played on Tuesday afternoon. One way or another, we will likely find out this week if the former Louisville quarterback will leave his alma mater after just three seasons.

The carousel just will not stop spinning.
