How’s that for OU football in its first year in the SEC? Alabama will be among the eight SEC opponents for the Sooners in 2024, SoonerScoop.com’s George Stoia confirmed Wednesday afternoon.

The Crimson Tide will be coming to Norman for the first time since 2002. Date and time will be determined at a later date. Brent Venables vs. Nick Saban.

The full 2024 SEC schedule will be released 6 p.m. Wednesday on the SEC Network, but we’re slowly learning some of the details.

ESPN has been able to confirm that all current SEC members will play either OU or Texas in 2024. Seven teams will play the Longhorns, seven the Sooners. And, of course, OU and Texas will renew the Red River Rivalry in Dallas for the other of the eight conference games.

Other games confirmed through media outlets include Georgia going to Texas and UT renewing its rivalry at Texas A&M. The Longhorns and Aggies have not played in football since 2011, the last year A&M was in the Big 12.

This will mark the first regular season matchup between OU and Alabama since the Sooners went to Tuscaloosa and won in 2003.

Memorable OU-Bama meetings

Obviously, OU and Alabama played in the 2014 Sugar Bowl following the 2013 season. In one of the bigger upsets in BCS history, the Sooners whipped the Tide 45-31.

It was a career outing from quarterback Trevor Knight and a defense that sacked A.J. McCarron seven times. It was punctuated by Eric Striker’s sack and a fumble returned for a touchdown by Geneo Grissom.

Going back to the 2002 meeting, that was memorable in its own right. OU raced out to a 23-3 lead that also saw Jason White tear his ACL for the second consecutive season.

The Sooners trailed 27-23 late in the fourth quarter before rallying to win 37-27. It was capped by a fumble return for a touchdown by freshman Eric Bassey as Alabama was attempting to drive to tie or win the game.

Alabama took out OU and Heisman winner Kyler Murray in the college football playoff in 2018.

SoonerScoop.com will have more reaction following the release of the full 2024 schedule Wednesday night.
