The first look for OU and Team 130 is in the books. Weather didn’t turn out to be nearly as bad as first thought, and Sooners were able to get in the spring game just fine.

There were definitely some names that stood out as you begin to see what this squad will look like for Brent Venables in the SEC in 2024.

Here are some very quick-hit news and notes from the Red-White spring game.

*Note: Full coverage coming to SoonerScoop all this weekend.

Burks show

You have to start with wide receiver Deion Burks. The transfer from Purdue was perhaps better than advertised. And the expectations are high to begin with. Burks had five catches for 174 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. His touchdown receptions were from 64 yards on the first drive of the game. And added a 50-yarder later in the half.

Arnold leading the way

It’s just fun to watch Jackson Arnold throw the ball. Every attempt feels like it could be something special. He only completed 10 of 20 passes, but it went for 233 yards with two touchdowns. And perhaps better yet? Zero turnovers.

Downs domination

It’s hard for defensive players to really make a mark in a spring game, but you couldn’t deny defensive end Ethan Downs. The senior was everywhere. He finished the first half with four tackles, including three tackles for loss and a sack.

RB by committee

There was some thought a couple of weeks ago about OU maybe looking into the portal. But it’s hard to make that argument. The backs were solid, even if Jovantae Barnes didn’t see action. Kalib Hicks had seven carries for 51 yards and a touchdown in the first half. Samuel Franklin showed what he could do with 54 yards on 10 attempts. And Gavin Sawchuk had 27 yards on his five carries with a score as well.

Defensive impressions

Defensive linemen Gracen Halton and PJ Adebawore had strong first halves. Earning sacks and then also not getting credited with what would have been sacks. Not too much in the backend, but Kani Walker did have two pass breakups.

Special teams news/notes

It was Burks as the primary kickoff returner. Peyton Bowen and Dez Malone were the punt returners. Tyler Keltner missed a 45-yard field goal attempt. Zach Schmit converted from 29 yards.
