OU is 2-0 and looking forward to its first road game of the season. Brent Venables and the Sooners travel just up the turnpike to take on Tulsa on Saturday.

The SoonerScoop crew was out in full force following Monday’s practice. Here is the best of the best from the players’ post-practice interviews

C Troy Everett

Playing guard instead of center?

“It was exciting, you know, just been preparing. I’ve been playing a lot of center, both interior (positions). It’s been fun just learning both positions, so I was grateful I got the opportunity to go in there; it was great. All the guys were very supportive with me. You know, like Savion, McKade, Raym, Walter—all the guys—Jake Taylor, Jacob Sexton, all the guys were supportive, keeping me up, keeping me positive. The whole group. That was the biggest thing on Saturday. We all kept each other up.”

Wake-up call about technique?

“I think it’s a wake-up call. Coach B harps on it all the time. He says eventually you can get exposed. If you’re playing guys who are below your talent level, you’re not going to be exposed on bad technique. You can use your strength to overcome that. But when you play guys who are a little better, maybe not even the best that you’re going to see, it’s going to expose you.”

TE Blake Smith

That first touchdown feeling?

“It’s been what, four years now? It felt good to finally get out there and once the play was called I kind of knew it was coming my way. So just executing it and the rest is history.”

Keep the ball?

“No, I gave it to the ref. My mind was, I was having an out-of-body experience.”

Forget you were on the extra point team?

“I ran over and I was just so excited with my teammates and then all of the sudden I had to go run back in.”

LB Danny Stutsman

Defense through first two weeks?

“We’re really playing together. We’re running the ball. A lot of strain. A lot of effort. And really we’re playing for one another. Every single guy, all 11 people on the field, they trust one another. They want each other to succeed. We have each other’s back.”
