Atlanta defensive back Jontae Gilbert was back on Rocky Top for a visit Friday. The Douglass standout came away impressed by Tennessee’s attention to detail and how laid back and attentive the staff was.

“It was great,” Gilbert said. “It was one of the best visits I’ve had before I feel like. I really got to talk ball with coach Martinez and coach Banks. I got to catch up with coach Garner and all those guys like coach Heup. That was good.”

His time with Willie Martinez and Tim Banks showed him what they bring to the table and what they see in his game.

“I feel like they are two of the best in the nation right now if you ask me,” Gilbert said. “They like that I can play all of the different positions in the secondary. They see me as a field corner, boundary corner and as a free safety guy and the star position.

“They like that I have a safety frame but corner technique and corner footwork. It was good to hear that.”

He also got to hangout with head coach Josh Heupel on this visit.

“We just been talking ball ever since he came to my school back in January,” Gilbert said. “Just what he sees me as and it was good.”

He has developed a great relationship with Levorn Harbin aka Coach Chop.

“He’s a great coach and great at what he does if your a recruit,” Gilbert said. “If he’s recruiting you why not commit?”

Tennessee had their final day of winter conditioning before the Vols begin spring break and return for spring practice on March 18th. He got to spend time with some of the players.

“I know Christian Conyer and I met Boo Carter today,” Gilbert said. “I know John Slaughter and Jordan Matthews. I got to see Boo do some work and he looked good. He knew what he was doing.”

So where does Tennessee stand for Gilbert?

“After today, they made a big impression on me so I’d say a top 3 school for me,” Gilbert said. “

Gilbert will officially visit Tennessee the second week of June.
