Volquest 2-minute Drill Recaps National Signing Day Comments From Josh Heupel

National [early] Signing Day for the Class of 2024 has come and gone with Tennessee inking 21 scholarship players from the prep/JUCO level. This past weekend, several members of the class made their moves into the Tennessee dormitories as the start of spring semester is this week.

In total, 13 players will have moved in by week’s end – along with eight scholarship transfers from the portal.

Quarterback Jake Merklinger and wide receiver Mike Matthews [a part of the 13] are arriving this week after wrapping up Polynesian Bowl festivities over the weekend with the latter taking home MVP honors. Additionally, linebacker Edwin Spillman, who also took part in the Polynesian Bowl, and cornerback Kaleb Beasley, are expected to be on campus in March following mid-semester graduations.

Those who made the move to Knoxville over the weekend include (11): wide receiver Braylon Staley, defensive backs Boo Carter, Edrees Farooq and Marcus Goree, running back Peyton Lewis, offensive linemen William Satterwhite, Max Anderson, Gage Ginther, Jesse Perry and Jeremias Heard and defensive lineman Kellen Lindstrom.

Members of the signing class who will be summer enrollees include (6): defensive linemen Jordan Ross, Jamal Wallace and Carson Gentle, offensive lineman Bennett Warren, tight end Cole Harrison and linebacker Jordan Burns.

Tennessee is set to have 15 total members of the signing class taking part in spring drills when they begin in March. All eight scholarship transfers will practice in the spring as well. Those players include tight ends Holden Steas and Miles Kitselman, defensive backs Jakobe Thomas, Jermod McCoy and Jalen McMurray, wide receiver Chris Brazzell, defensive lineman Jaxson Moi and offensive lineman Zalance Heard.

Prep signees Carter, Goree, Perry, Anderson, Satterwhite, Ginther, Merklinger, Matthews, Farooq, Lindstrom and Staley all took part in some Citrus Bowl practices. Additionally, transfers Jakobe Thomas and Holden Steas were with the team for some bowl prep as well after being introduced.

“I love the length and athleticism that we’ve added,” said Josh Heupel on Signing Day. “You look at what we’ve signed, obviously a point of emphasis was the line of scrimmage. We’ll continue to add really good players to our roster in that way, and then athleticism and length at the skill spots. They’re dynamic in the way that they play. I love the competitive makeup of this group. Some guys have already shown some leadership traits, and I’m excited to get to work with them whenever they get to campus.”

Tennessee signed the 12th overall class in the 2024 national recruiting rankings, per On3.
