During the early signing period, Texas brought in a historic six-man offensive line class headlined by Kelvin Banks, the No. 1 offensive tackle according to the On3 Consensus. Longhorn offensive line coach Kyle Flood wasn’t content with six. There was a seventh lineman he sought after in Devon Campbell.

On Wednesday, Campbell, the No. 1 interior offensive lineman according to the On3 Consensus, joined Texas’ 2022 class when he chose the Longhorns over Oklahoma.

Campell chose the Longhorns over 30-plus other offers including LSU, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Oregon, Texas A&M, and USC. He is the second On3 Consensus five-star in the class along with Banks. With his commitment, Texas added three of the state’s top ten prospects according to the On3 Consensus.

Ranked as the No. 12 overall prospect in the On3 Consensus, Campbell visited Texas on July 30 and November 13. Throughout the entire recruiting process, the Longhorns held a lead over Campbell’s other suitors thanks to the work done by Flood and tight ends coach Jeff Banks.

If the HUDL video and in person evaluation doesn’t do it, just turn on some hoops highlights and it’s easy to see why he’s coveted. The feet and agility at his size aren’t easily found. Campbell is soft-spoken and nice when you meet him in person, but he will bury you on Friday nights in the run game. He can still dunk a basketball at over 300 pounds. – Gerry Hamilton

Guards often get dinged from a value standpoint but that’s out the window with Campbell because he’s that awesome of a prospect. With guards you should ask yourself, could he play defensive tackle? The answer is a resounding yes when it comes to Campbell. – Eric Nahlin

Devon Campbell

Campbell has so much Justin Blalock to his game. His size, athleticism versatility, and strength means he could contribute early during his career in Austin. His prowess on the basketball floor further cements his status as a special talent with pro potential at both guard and tackle. – Justin Wells

Evaluating Devon Campbell

Campbell is one of the best pulling run blockers I’ve ever seen at the high school level. He routinely reads well on the run and beats linebackers to spots, sometimes blocking them so completely he’s able to move on and pick off new targets. He’s a very fluid athlete for his size and excels at blocking defenders in space.

He has obvious projection as a gap scheme guard, and that’s definitely the most common evaluation, but he’s good heads-up as well and his athleticism and reach could also translate at tackle. Flood would love to use him on counter runs and play-action protections that pull a guard because he’d be equally devastating as a pulling run blocker or picking up backside defenders in protection. It’s not often a guard is the most impactful member of a line but Campbell could follow that path to becoming such a player. Or he could probably also be a great tackle. – Ian Boyd

Campbell is the 28th member of Texas’ 2022 class.
