The first national signing day for college football begins December 20 and runs through December 22. This series gives you the chance to familiarize yourself with the next class charged with keeping Texas in a position of national prominence.

To win at a consistently high level means stacking talented class after talented class. The top-five 2024 class does just that following top-five finishes in the 2022 and 2023 classes.

On the first national signing day, Inside Texas will offer profiles of each member of the 2024 signing class. Up next, Xavier Filsaime.

The Player: Xavier Filsaime, DB, McKinney (Texas)

The Rating: 96.46 (four-star)

The Ranking: Filsaime is ranked as the No. 33 overall prospect, the No. 2 safety, and the No. 7 prospect in Texas according to the On3 Industry Ranking. On3 ranks Filsaime as the No. 61 overall prospect, the No. 5 safety, and the No. 14 po

The Highlights:

The Recruitment: Texas didn’t ramp up its pursuit of the Florida commit until mid-October, when the Longhorns invited Filsaime to the Red River Shootout in Dallas. Despite the loss for Texas, that event sparked a relationship that would continue to strengthen over the course of the next two months. As Texas advanced to the College Football Playoff, the Gators dipped and stayed below .500. Multiple visits to Austin, including one of the official variety the weekend before signing day, drove Filsaime to flip to the Longhorns and join a top-five class.

The Projection: At Texas, he might get a look at nickel due to his combination of physicality, awareness, and the speed which allows him to turn and run with receivers in man coverage. He’s about 6-foot-0 already, will be 200 pounds in no time once he hits campus (around 180 now), and one of his best current attributes besides pure speed is his willingness to close distance and tackle. Ultimately he may end up at field safety and erase space for offenses as a deep defender but I wouldn’t be surprised if he got a look at Star (nickel) first to make sure his athleticism and play smarts translate at that “do it all” position. – Ian Boyd

The Reasoning: “Knowing my future would be stable and the opportunities outside of football.”

The Relationship: “I’m the closest with coach Gideon, the safeties coach. The scheme they use is basically the same we use at my school now, so it’s not really much of a change from what I’m doing now.”

The Enrollment: Filsaime will enroll early.

The Final Word: Even though Texas was late to the party, it made Filsaime feel like a priority while the Gator program floundered. Texas needed a talent influx at safety, and Filsaime helped the Longhorns gain what they were looking for in the 2024 class.
