On the latest video episode of On Texas Football’s State of the Program, Inside Texas’s Bobby Burton and Eric Nahlin discuss last weekend’s big recruiting commitments for the Longhorns, another crucial official visit period this coming weekend, and how important it is to get the right players in the right positions as Texas gets ready to head to the Southeastern Conference in 2024.

Texas picked up commitments last weekend from Santana Wilson, a cornerback out of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Freddie Dubose, a wide receiver from Smithson Valley, and look to parlay some of that success into this weekend.

“Love Santana Wilson,” said Nahlin, the publisher of InsideTexas.com. “I think in the NIL era if you can get a guy that’s probably not looking for NIL as much thanks to the success of his father but is ultra-talented at the same time, that’s a win and a win. That’s more than you bargained for normally. He’s an electric athlete. To me, he’s a field corner who can cover a lot of territory and is explosive and he’s got a good build on him.

“Dubose is a high upside guy,” Nahlin continued. “You see him run and you would offer him just running in a vertical route, you know, it’s just a thing of beauty. He suffered an injury and came back incredibly fast, almost historically fast, from that injury so that tells you that he’s even more of a freak than we originally thought. He seems really want to be a Longhorn, too. And you know, sometimes that counts for a whole lot.”

It’s another big weekend for the Longhorns on the recruiting front, with about 20 players visiting Austin on Friday and Saturday.

“Two of the bigger positions to focus on for this weekend we believe are the defensive line, not only the edge position, but also the interior,” Burton said. “As Texas moves to the SEC, that’s going to be a focal point a year from now when a lot of these guys are first on campus.”

Nahlin said Texas has to have success with recruiting in the 2024 defensive line class because they are behind in that position.

“This is the this is the group of guys that Texas needed in the last cycle, so they’re a year behind the curve which tells you how important they are this year,” Nahlin explained. “They have got to absolutely crush this defensive line class.”

Nahlin opines that the Longhorns will need four interior defensive linemen and three EDGE players from this class.
