Texas to add HS coach to staff

GILMER — Source tells Inside Texas that Gilmer head coach Jeff Traylor is expected to accept the available TE/ ST coaching position at Texas.

Traylor, graduate of SFA, has been the head coach and athletic director at Gilmer since 2000. He won three state titles along the way – 2004, 2009, and 2014. They lost title games in 2007 and 2012. Gilmer has made the playoffs for 14 consecutive years.

Traylor has spent 15 years on the sidelines at Gilmer. He boasts a record of 175-26. Traylor replaces former UT coach Bruce Chambers, the only holdover from Mack Brown retained by Charlie Strong.

An area coach familiar with Traylor had this to say:

“He started coaching CBs in Jacksonville and quickly rose up the ranks of the coaching tree,” said the source. “He’s got an extensive background in both sides of the ball – offense and defense. (Gilmer) has basically averaged 50 ppg since he took over 15 years ago.”

Coaching at his alma mater in Gilmer was special to Traylor, but the chance to move on to something newer and bigger was hard to refuse.

“It’s the opportunity all high school coaches would love to have,” said the source. “His brother left a few years ago to coach at A&M so I wasn’t surprised to hear him accepting the position with Texas. He’s a players coach. He gets the most out of each player. It’s his gift.”

Cedar Hill HC Joey McGuire removed his name from the opening last weekend. Texas is interviewing former LSU DL coach Brick Haley for the same position in Austin. Here’s the latest.
