A look at the Texas Longhorns defense at practice No. 2
Day two of practice served as another opportunity for current Texas Longhorn players to become more accustomed to Steve Sarkisian’s way of doing things without any pads on. After a look at the offense yesterday, I tried to garner as much information as possible about the defense through binoculars.
-First, a couple of injury notes. DaJon Harrison was in his green non-contact jersey once again. As Sarkisian mentioned in his Thursday press conference, Ben Davis and Gabriel Watson were limited in their participation. There was a new addition to the list of those with ailments as offensive lineman Isaiah Hookfin was in a walking boot during the media viewing portion of practice. He still had his Longhorn helmet and Texas practice jersey on, but he obviously was not a full participant.
-Similar schedule as yesterday: stretch, ball security drills, special teams drills, then individual during the media viewing period.
-While the majority of the skill players were working on ball security, some of the defensive ends were working on drills on the southern portion of the Denius Fields. It appeared to be the JACKs (strongside edge player) in the following order: Jacoby Jones — Patrick Bayouth (w-o) — David Abiara — Chris Hannon (w-o) — Jordon Thomas.
-The team then went into their special teams work as detailed yesterday.
-The defensive tackles were working with Texas Longhorns defensive line coach Bo Davis in an individual drill. One tackle would put the move the drill was trying to teach on one of his position mates, then Davis would move down the line. The order was: Keondre Coburn and Moro Ojomo — T’Vondre Sweat and Sawyer Goram-Welch — Byron Murphy and Myron Warren — Vernon Broughton and Alfred Collins.
-Collins and Warren switched places a few times. I don’t exactly know if this is indicative of a depth chart, but it is also only day two of practice.

-There were some special teams drills taking place while the big guys were working on their own. The returners (again in no particular order): D’Shawn Jamison — Joshua Moore — Xavier Worthy — Kai Money — Jordan Whittington
-When I focused in on the safeties, they were progressing through footwork and ball tracking drills with Blake Gideon. The drill was done in pairs, and this was an order I saw through several turns: Brenden Schooler and Chris Adimora — BJ Foster and Jerrin Thompson — Doak Wilson (w-o) and Tyler Owens — Anthony Cook and Marques Caldwell — Christian Tschauner (w-o) and JD Coffey — Michael Taaffe (w-o) and Thatcher Milton (w-o).
-Cornerbacks were with Terry Joseph, and an pecking order I gathered from the Longhorn defensive backs was D’Shawn Jamison and Josh Thompson — Darion Dunn and Jahdae Barron — Kitan Crawford and Ishmael Ibraheem.
-As I was walking out, the offensive linemen and tight ends were working on combo blocks on the outside. When media was escorted out, the team was heading into live one-on-one drills between receivers and defensive backs.
-Practice three is tomorrow night.
