Caleb Williams has had a great first half of his first season in Los Angeles. He has helped lead USC to an undefeated record and has picked up where he left off at Oklahoma. With that said, Williams isn’t necessarily pleased with his play so far.

Williams opened up on how he feels he has played in 2022 after USC’s practice on Wednesday. He thinks he has played okay, can play better, and is actively working on doing just that.

“I’ve played alright. I’ve played alright. I feel like I can play a lot better…I’m trying to get to that point. This team needs my best throughout this last stretch of the season because we’re in the second half of it,” said Williams. “Just working hard, being more consistent, being in the film room more, being around those guys, getting more reps, focusing on the small things. Because, in the second half of the season, Coach Riley said the small things that you do? They matter so much more.”

There’s not much to complain about when you look at Williams’ season thus far. He has completed 64.9% of his passes for a total of 1,590 yards, 14 touchdowns, and only one interception. Williams has rushed for three scores as well. Overall, it’s the kind of campaign that has him firmly in the conversation for the Heisman Trophy.

Still, Williams expects better from himself. He’s not frustrated but he knows that, based on his performance so far, there’s more that he can still do.

“Football is a process. You gotta get better so me not being at my best just proves that I need to do more,” Williams said.

USC has passed all six of its tests so far with flying colors. The back end of their schedule provides three major challenges, though, in Utah this weekend as well as UCLA and Notre Dame to end the season. If the Trojans want to stay unblemished and make their case for the CFP, it’ll take Williams to continue his pace or make the ‘improvements’ he’s referring to. If he does in fact have another level to go to, then the Trojans will feel just fine heading into each of those contests.
