NC State WR Teddy Hoffmann suspended for 2026

NC State sophomore wide receiver Teddy Hoffmann will serve a one-year suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance by mistake. NC State coach Dave Doeren: “Teddy made a mistake that he’s taken responsibility for in front of his teammates and coaches. It’s an unfortunate reminder about the importance of always checking with the sports medicine staff before taking any type of medication or supplement to make sure it’s permitted. I know he will learn and grow from this experience.”

Eff the ncaa! Play him anyway! Lawyer up and sue for eligibility! They’re the ncaa… Whatcha gonna do? Huh? Huh? Well, that leaves a dent. I hate it for Teddy. Takes some of the hometown flavor away from our offense. So is this just that he can’t play? Or does this mean no practice? no team activities? Can he still use the weight room? still train? Shoulda taken a page from the Kerliner playbook. Claim learning disability and prescribe PEDs in-house. All perfectly… *cough*cough*… legal. Free Teddy! Free Teddy!

It's not hard to avoid these types of situations with all of the resources available as to what is and what isn't allowed. Frustrating for the staff i'm sure.

Most of the NIL deals are tied to roster/ “on scholarship” and participation is not a condition (ie- pay for play). If he is excluded from the roster but still on a football scholarship, things will get legally interesting

That is the last of WP receivers that have caught meaningful passes in an NC State jersey Next man up but ouch. Hate for him and the team

How far are we into FB spring practice, 10, 15 practices already, or…? How much time is left, when is the end of spring practice? Was Teddy getting most 1st Team reps, so who is next in line to get more reps now? I missed all the insiders’ posts on how practice is going, who’s emerging… (I only saw DD’s interview after day 1)

Pretty sure the staff has known about this and adjusted practice reps accordingly.

That depends, the problem is if you take something over the counter ( which can be an irresistible urge). Most of these products are mislabled and some just say proprietary blends. Most of the FDA fines on companies come from not following the labeling versus safety issues and over the counter products are not regulated by the FDA for safety or efficacy.

I don’t know how you get popped in spring ball.

WTF??? I can’t even recall the last time any college football player was docked an entire season for an illegal substance case. The NCAA turns a blind eye to literally everything else under the sun, but Hoffman gets popped? Hmmm….

Are we planning to appeal, and/or Ask for a reduced penalty?

The punishment does not fit the crime for many reasons. Now I have no idea what his does to eligibility etc, but for sure any punishment for a violation typically has some mitigating circumstances that affect the degree of punishment. The lack of eligibility for several games while he undergoes more testing would seem more appropriate and allowing him to stay on the team, practice while losing eligibility etc. This would seem better from both a deterrent perspective and what is best for the kid. Has anyone addressed those questions or are we in a vacuum.

For sure. I’m still curious in what team functions he can participate… any? none? On the surface this punishment seems to not fit the crime, and is counterproductive.

Curious of when he actually got popped. Sucks for him and the team, but hopefully he learns from it and returns next year.

I like your thought but this is like getting a DUI when you should’ve taken an Uber. It’s very easy to reach out to the nutrition staff the strength staff and get their opinion before you take something.

I think you may be missing the issue, you can not trust any supplement due to the lack labeling of these products. Unless the nutrition staff has a validated FDA testing lab to send samples then they have nothing to offer and given the manufacturing process even that might not be consistent from batch to batch. To be clear there is a testing lab to do certification for Sports but I am not sure that is full proof either
