Brazier caps stunning return with 800m victory at USATF Championships
The greatest 800 meter runner in American history is back, and it’s like he never left.
Texas A&M alum Donavan Brazier, who has missed three full years of competition with injuries, stunned the crowd at the USA Track & Field Championships — to say nothing of his opponents — by winning the 800 meters in record time. Brazier ran the 800 in 1:42.16, which is .18 seconds faster than the time that won him the World Championship in Qatar six years ago. It also broke a 34-year-old American record.
Brazier, now 28, will have a chance to retake the world title next month at the World Championships in Tokyo.
Aggies land nation’s third-ranked quarterback for 2027
Texas A&M is on the board for the class of 2027 with the addition of Valdosta (Ga.) Lowndes 4-star quarterback Jayce Johnson, who committed to the Aggies Sunday. The Aggies were able to ward off efforts from SEC foes like Tennessee and South Carolina and a concerted push from nearby Florida State.
Johnson told On3’s Chad Simmons that Mike Elko and the Texas A&M staff made it a point to recruit not just him, but his entire family.
“It just felt right. The love they showed — not just to me, but to my mom, dad, and little sister — it meant a lot. I’m big on love and loyalty, and being around the people and the town in the summer really sealed it,” he said. “The environment reminds me of home. It’s a football town, it is a country town — just like Valdosta. And I really connected with the staff. I love their spiritual side, their discipline, and how they bring people together.”
Johnson is currently the third-ranked quarterback in the nation in the Rivals/On3 rankings.
Bucky gets 14th player for upcoming season
Texas A&M basketball also added a Sunday commitment, picking up former Rice, Vanderbilt and Kansas guard Noah Shelby.
The 6-foot-3 native of McKinney has played in 44 games (14 at Vanderbilt, 30 at Rice), averaging 3.9 points per game. He has made 37.5% of his shots, including 32.5% from 3-point range. He has a career mark of 79.3% from the free throw line, including 85% while at Rice.
