2025 Uniformity – Special Edition: Sun Devils Reveal 1975 Throwback Strategy Uniform

Honoring History
When the Sun Devils play Texas Tech on October 18th, the school will also be honoring the Hall of Fame class of 2025. Included in that group will be the undefeated 1975 Fiesta Bowl Champion Sun Devil team, which finished number 2 overall in both the AP and Coaches polls. While the team does not claim it, Sporting News magazine and the National Championship Foundation both named the Sun Devils their national champion. There is some legitimate reasoning as to why those two entities disagreed with the AP and Coaches by crowning that Arizona State team. The Frank Kush-coached 1975 Sun Devils were the only undefeated team in college football that season, and the Nebraska team that they beat in the Fiesta Bowl was the only team to beat the AP and Coaches polls’ champion, the Oklahoma Sooners. Despite those facts, it was likely ASU’s membership in the mid-major WAC conference at the time that held back some voters from awarding the Sun Devils the top spot in the nation that season. Despite just missing out on the national championship, this team produced plenty of moments that live on in Sun Devil lore to this day. The uniform the 2025 Sun Devils wear for the Hall of Fame game will honor that 1975 team, so let’s take a look at the details.
1975 Throwback Uniform
Before diving into the new uniform, let’s first address the helmet. There are no photographs of the helmet in this article, and the official Sun Devil Athletics press release does not include a decal. The reason for that is because the team has chosen to withhold the official helmet reveal until the week leading up to the Hall of Fame game. A couple of notes in terms of accuracy from that official press release are that the helmet will feature a single maroon center stripe and gray facemasks, which is accurate to what the 1975 team wore.
Let’s first take a look at the 1975 jersey. Despite it being a home game, the Sun Devils will be wearing a light jersey. The jersey is officially a vintage white, which is a slightly off-white, cream color. The numbers on the front and back of the jersey are collegiate, bold maroon. The nameplate is a maroon plain text font. The sleeves feature a maroon, white, and gold tri-stripe. The top of the shoulders has a circular gold patch that features Sparky within a maroon sunburst. There is a maroon Big 12 logo with a gold border on the right shoulder, and a maroon adidas logo on the left shoulder. The back of the collar has a bold, maroon “KUSH” in honor of the legendary coach who led the team to the unforgettable undefeated season. Noticeably absent from this uniform is a PT*42 patch honoring Pat Tillman at the base of the collar, which has been a mainstay on ASU football uniforms for over two decades now. This is a choice that was made based on trying to convey the historical accuracy of the appearance of the 1975 uniforms.

The pants are very straightforward. They are gold with a single, bold, maroon stripe running down the side of each leg and a maroon adidas logo on the left hip.

Reaction
This look is an absolute home run. If I had any critique, it is that the Sun Devils are wearing white, or vintage white in this case, for a home game. That allows the visiting team to wear their solid colors, which is a pet peeve of mine. However, there was a maroon iteration of the 1975 uniform for the 45th anniversary, which was worn against UCLA in ASU’s only home game of 2020. Unfortunately, nobody was there to see that in person, as it was in the midst of a global pandemic. It’s good to see the white jersey this time around. The Sparky patches and stripes pop off the shoulders and are the elements that have always made the uniforms from that era so iconic. I look forward to game week and delving deeper into the details.
