Week in Review

Just as the week prior, Arizona State’s performance in Starkville left much to be desired. A nearly fruitless first half saw only seven yards passing and only 3 points on the board courtesy of a last-second Jesus Gomez field goal. This team showed the same sense of resilience and grit that we’ve come to know from Kenny Dillingham-coached teams as they clawed back from a 17-0 deficit to eventually take a 20-17 lead. There was a dedication to running the ball, and the offensive line showed dominance throughout the entire half that allowed for the comeback. Unfortunately, blown coverage and a Sun Devil interception in the final 30 seconds sealed the loss to Mississippi State. Despite the loss, there were some things to build upon, and as good as that second-half comeback looked, the uniforms looked even better.

Wearing Sparky is never a bad choice, and doing so with this uniform combination was an excellent choice. The white helmet, white jersey, and gold pant uniform combination worked very well with the large Sparky decal, as there was plenty of color to play off of, despite two of the three major uniform elements having a white base. The new core white jerseys were worn for the first time, and just as expected, they looked incredible. The addition of the maroon Arizona State team name to the front of the jersey makes it look more complete, and also gives more color depth to the uniform, adding the character that the most recent uniform generations lacked.

I would have been interested to see a different color facemask, perhaps gold, a la the Michigan State game in 2019. That doesn’t necessarily mean it would look better than the white facemask, which I thought worked well; it just would’ve been interesting to see if it played well or clashed with the Sparky face decal. All in all, I thought it was a great opening road uniform look.

The Week to Come

Uniform

The Sun Devils will look to bounce back this week against a Texas State team fresh off a 43-36 barn burner victory over UTSA. When the Sun Devils take the field against Texas State, they will wear this year’s iteration of their Maroon Monsoon uniform.

The maroon jerseys feature gold “Arizona State” print in Sun Devil Bold font across the chest, gold player numbers outlined in white on both the front and back of the jersey, as well as the TV numbers on the sleeves. The sleeves also feature angular maroon fabric accents, symbolizing the rays on the Arizona state flag. A welcome change to this generation of jerseys compared to the prior is that the jersey numbers are fabric rather than printed. The numbers on the new jersey also appear to have a larger vertical format than last season.

The nameplate on the back of the jersey utilizes the gold plain text font. On the front of the jersey, near the left shoulder, is a gold adidas logo. Near the right shoulder is a maroon and gold Big 12 logo. There is also a gold O2V printed on the inside of the collar, harkening to the final lyrics to the Arizona State fight song, “Onward to Victory.” Last, but not least, at the base of the collar is the black PT*42 shield in honor of ASU Football legend, Pat Tillman.

The maroon pants now have a gold adidas logo on the left hip and a maroon pitchfork with gold trim on the right hip.

Helmet

The maroon color shift helmet features standard white pitchfork decals with gold trim and a thin maroon border. The facemask is maroon, and the front bumper has a maroon base and white “Arizona State” text. The maroon chinstrap has a small maroon pitchfork with gold trim, while the actual straps are also maroon and have gold Arizona State print.

The decals on the back of the helmet include a maroon Big 12 logo with a white border, a white PT*42 shield honoring the legendary Sun Devil, Pat Tillman, a white Warning label which is in the shape of the state of Arizona, features white text, and has a small, maroon pitchfork with gold trim over Tempe, and an American flag. The decals on the back of the helmet are rounded by the white “Sun Devils” text on a maroon base rear bumper.

If this helmet looks familiar, that’s because it is almost the same helmet build that the Sun Devils wore for the Maroon Monsoon last year against Kansas. The only difference is that this year’s version does not have a center stripe.

Cleats and Socks

Maroon and black cleats will be worn for the opening game. From left to right, there are three different types of cleats. The first two pairs are lighter cleats and are typically worn by speed position players (wide receivers and defensive backs), while the last pair is worn by heavier players (linemen).

From left to right, the pair furthest to the left is the adizero Electric. It features a maroon sole that reaches upward toward the heel of the shoe. They have a textured maroon base with three gold stripes and an adizero Electric wordmark on the outside of the shoe. The top portion of the cleat is a primeknit with a gold adizero wordmark on the tongue, and there is a maroon adidas logo with gold outline on the instep. It has maroon laces speckled with gold and a maroon heel tab with a gold adizero Electric logo. The next pair is the adizero Impact. It features a gold sole, the maroon base has three gold stripes with mesh texture stylizations on the outside of the shoe, and there is an identical gold three stripe mark on the instep as well. The maroon laces are speckled with gold, there is a gold tongue loop with a maroon adizero wordmark on the tongue, and the cleat also has a gold finger loop on the heel.

The final pair is the adizero Chaos, made for more ankle support for heavier linemen. It has a black sole and base with white mesh stylized three stripes on the outside of the foot, and black laces.

Maroon socks will be worn to match the cleats as well.

Gloves

The Sun Devils will wear white gloves, and as with the cleats, there are different gloves for different positions. The gloves on the top are adizeros, which are typically worn by speed position players like wide receivers and defensive backs. The white adizeros feature a maroon pitchfork with gold trim on the palm of each glove. They also have three maroon stripes logo on the back of the hand, a maroon adidas logo on the corner of the wrist strap, and a white, tonal adizero word mark on the pointer finger. The gloves in the middle are adidas Freaks, worn by larger skill position players such as linebackers and tight ends. The white adidas Freak gloves feature the same maroon pitchfork palm design as the adizero, three maroon stripes on the back of the hand, and differ by having a maroon adizero wordmark on the white wristband. Finally, for linemen, the gloves on the bottom are adidas Freak-Max, which boast extra padding on the heel of the palm meant to withstand all of the contact that linemen endure throughout the course of a game. They are plain white with black padding on the palm, and along with a maroon adidas logo on the back of the hand, they also have maroon accents on the knuckles and the black wrist-wrap.

Reaction

The Devils need to bounce back, and this week is the perfect opportunity to do so. Texas State is a quality mid-major opponent, but they also present the chance for ASU to get right prior to beginning Big 12 conference play against Baylor the following week. The Maroon Monsoon has seen modest success over the years. This matchup is favorable for the Sun Devils to get back in the win column, which is what all of Sun Devil Nation wants to see.

There’s some consistency in this year’s Maroon Monsoon uniform. As mentioned before, the helmet is nearly identical, save for the fact that this year’s helmet lacks a center stripe. The jerseys and pants are different as well, but only because the core uniform template has changed year over year. Otherwise, the monochromatic maroon uniform will continue to look as bold and intimidating as ever. This is annually one of the best looks that ASU wears, and I can’t wait to see the Sun Devils wear it as they look to get back in the win column.

What Color #Faniform ASU Fans Should Wear: Maroon

Honorary #Faniform

Arizona State Athletic Director Graham Rossini continues to join in the fun of submitting a #faniform each week. While it is still a #faniform, anything submitted from Rossini will never be eligible for the #faniforms presented by Cactus Sports contest. However, we still love to highlight his participation and just how well-dressed he is. Last game, Rossini wore a white Sparky face cap with a maroon bill for his headwear. He wore a light gold shirt that has a gold pitchfork with maroon trim on the left chest area under a maroon and white pinstriped Sparky polo. His look was finished off by white Continental 80 shoes with maroon accents.
