Week in Review

Ok, just so we’re all clear now, going down 17-0 on the road = bad, but going down 17-0 at home = good. Alright, obviously giving up 17 unanswered points before scoring any yourself is never good, but at least the Devils were able to pick themselves up and come back to beat TCU after trailing early. The Sun Devils’ offense was anemic for the first quarter and a half of their Blackout game, but found some serious momentum, scoring touchdowns on consecutive drives in the 2nd quarter and threatening to score again going into half if not for a Sam Leavitt fumble. Ultimately, this is another game that the Sun Devils dominated in almost every facet except the scoreboard. They gained 498 yards compared to the Horned Frogs’ 269, which included only 10 yards rushing. The Sun Devils won the turnover battle 3-1 and owned the time of possession battle with a 35:47 to 24:13 advantage. ASU’s greatest enemy all night was critical down and goal-line situations, an issue that plagued them in the five games prior to their bye week. Last game, much like the game at Baylor before it, should have been at least a two-score win. All that said, it was great to see the spirit of resilience and fight, which the Valley and the nation fell in love with in 2024, is alive and strong. It would just be better for the hearts of ASU fans if the Devils could match their statistical domination with scoreboard domination as well. Speaking of good for the heart, let’s talk about those Blackout uniforms.

For the first time since 2018, the Sun Devils wore a true head-to-toe monochrome black uniform for their annual Blackout game. Outside of the maroon trim on the small pitchfork on the right hip of the pants, the uniform lacked any maroon. Whereas in the past, the gold jersey numbers on black jerseys had maroon outlines, this iteration’s gold jersey numbers have no border. While I would’ve preferred to see more maroon, this updated black uniform boasted its own positive qualities. They looked tough. The team looked bigger and meaner, and the new satin paint finish on the helmet allowed the gold trim of the black pitchfork to jump off the helmet. The crowd was electric and filled the stands despite the game taking place on a very stormy Friday night. That sold out crowd was treated to a great game and a solid uniform. Even the national rating sites agreed, as both UNISWAG and UniAuthority ranked the Sun Devils’ Blackout uniform as their number 8 uniform of the week.

Blackout: A

The Week to Come

Uniform

Following their bye week, Arizona State will head out on the road to Salt Lake City for a night game against a tough Utah team. Utah has looked strong this season, with its only loss coming against an increasingly impressive Texas Tech team. The Devils will have their hands full with mobile quarterback and local Arizona high school product Devon Dampier, as well as the ever-staunch Utah defense. When they take the field against the Utes, the Sun Devils will be wearing a black helmet, white jersey, black pant uniform combination.

The white jerseys feature maroon “Arizona State” print in Sun Devil Bold font across the chest, maroon player numbers with gold outline on both the front and back of the jersey, as well as the TV numbers on the top of the sleeves. The sleeves feature angular white fabric accents that represent the rays of the Arizona state flag.

The nameplate on the back of the jersey utilizes the maroon plain text font. On the front of the jersey, near the left shoulder, is a maroon adidas logo. Near the right shoulder is a maroon and gold Big 12 logo. There is also a maroon O2V printed on the inside of the collar, and, as always, at the base of the collar is the black PT*42 shield.

The black pants have a gold adidas logo on the left hip and a gold pitchfork with maroon trim on the right hip.

Helmet

The black helmet features standard sized black pitchforks with gold trim. The facemask is black, and the front bumper features a black base with a gold word mark that reads “Sun Devils.” The decals on the back of the helmet include a transparent Big 12 logo with a gold border, a gold PT*42 shield honoring the legendary Sun Devil, Pat Tillman, a gold Warning label which is in the shape of the state of Arizona, features gold text, and has a small, maroon pitchfork with gold trim over Tempe, and an American flag. The decals on the back of the helmet are rounded by the gold “Arizona State” text black base rear bumper.

Cleats and Socks

The Sun Devils will wear white cleats against Utah. From left to right, there are three different types of cleats. The first two pairs are lighter cleats and are typically worn by speed position players (wide receivers and defensive backs), while the last pair is worn by heavier players (linemen).

From left to right, the pair furthest to the left is the adizero Electric. It features a white sole that reaches upward toward the heel of the shoe. They have a textured white base with three maroon stripes and an adizero Electric wordmark on the outside of the shoe. The top portion of the cleat is a primeknit with a maroon adizero wordmark on the tongue, and there is a white adidas logo with a maroon outline on the instep. It has white laces speckled with maroon and a white heel tab with a maroon adizero Electric logo. The next pair is the adizero Impact. It features a white sole, the white base has three maroon stripes with mesh texture stylizations on the outside of the shoe, and there is an identical maroon three stripe mark on the instep as well. The white laces are speckled with maroon, there is a white tongue loop with a white adizero wordmark on the tongue, and the cleat also has a white finger loop on the heel.

The final pair is the adizero Chaos, made for more ankle support for heavier linemen. It has a white sole and base with maroon mesh stylized three stripes on the outside of the foot, and white laces.

White socks will be worn to match the cleats as well.

Gloves

The Sun Devils will wear black gloves, and as with the cleats, there are different gloves for different positions. The gloves on the top are adizeros, which are typically worn by speed position players like wide receivers and defensive backs. The black adizeros feature a maroon pitchfork with gold trim on the palm of each glove. They also have a three gold stripes logo on the back of the hand, a gold adidas logo on the corner of the wrist strap, and a black, tonal adizero word mark on the pointer finger. The gloves in the middle are adidas Freaks, worn by larger skill position players such as linebackers and tight ends. The black adidas Freak gloves feature the same maroon pitchfork palm design as the adizero, three gold stripes on the back of the hand, and differ by having a gold adizero wordmark on the black wristband. Finally, for linemen, the gloves on the bottom are adidas Freak-Max, which boast extra padding on the heel of the palm meant to withstand all of the contact that linemen endure throughout the course of a game. They are plain black with black padding on the palm, and along with a gold adidas logo on the back of the hand, they also have gold accents on the knuckles and the black wrist-wrap.

Reaction

There have been some good experiences for the Sun Devils wearing this uniform combination, though it’s been a while since we’ve seen it. The last time the black/white/black uniform was worn was in November 2017 on a foggy day in Corvallis for a dominant win over Oregon State. Perhaps the most memorable time that it was worn was in 2014 when the Sun Devils staged an incredible 4th quarter comeback against USC which ended with the now infamous Jael Mary pass from Mike Bercovici to Jaelen Strong. Let us also not forget Marion Grice’s dominant performance in the 2012 Territorial Cup game that saw the Sun Devils come from behind to claim the Cup with a strong second half. So, why not wear it for the most significant road game to date?

The Oreo combination (Black cookie on top and bottom, white crème center) is all class. What it lacks in traditional maroon and gold, it makes up for in toughness, and yes, sophistication. It doesn’t hurt that it has a winning history. I only have a couple of critiques of this uniform. First, it would have been nice not to see the black helmet and pants in two consecutive games. Second, and in the same vein, it would have been nice to see a different decal than the one worn in the Blackout game to add a little variety. Otherwise, this is a great look and will play well for what’s expected to be a rainy night game in Salt Lake City.

What Color #Faniform Traveling ASU Fans Should Wear: Gold

Honorary #Faniform

Arizona State Athletic Director Graham Rossini continues to join in the fun of submitting a #faniform each week. While it is still a #faniform, anything submitted from Rossini will never be eligible for the #faniforms presented by Cactus Sports contest. However, we still love to highlight his participation and just how well-dressed he is. Last game, Rossini gold poncho with a Sparky pattern, while the athletic department scrambled to keep the seats and field dry as the largest day of rainfall in years wreaked havoc before the game against TCU. We can only assume that Rossini was dressed to the nines, as per usual, beneath that poncho. All that said, he, the grounds crew, and everyone else who had boots on the ground did an incredible job making Mountain America Stadium a safe and comfortable environment to watch the game despite the unfavorable weather conditions leading up to kickoff.
