Four-star safety Donovan Webb dives into Texas Tech pledge

Independence Day always brings excitement, but for Texas Tech the fireworks got started early last week with the commitment of Frisco (TX) Panther Creek safety Donovan Webb. Webb was one of three blue chip recruits to commit to the Red Raiders in three consecutive days, joining running back Ace Rowden and offensive tackle Felix Ojo.
Webb started the festivities, announcing his pledge to the Scarlet and Black on Wednesday, July 2nd. Webb chose Texas Tech over a final group that also included Michigan, Kansas State and Notre Dame.
Though Michigan was seen as the favorite to land Webb’s services the last few weeks, the Red Raider coaches’ relentless pursuit – led by safeties coach Rob Greene – eventually led to the talented defensive back staying in his home state.
“Texas Tech, first off they made me feel like a priority. Another reason is they offered me a great opportunity to play early and I built great relationships with the coaches. Those are a few reasons why I chose Tech over all the other schools.”
Safeties coach Rob Greene shining in first offseason in Lubbock
A quick look at Texas Tech’s 2026 commit list will show a heavy defensive back presence. That includes at safety where the Red Raiders hold commitments from Webb, Aaron Bradshaw and Maddox Quiller.
The trio are a few of Texas Tech’s top commits, which is notable because Texas Tech’s safeties coach Rob Greene just arrived in Lubbock over the offseason. He’s made a big impact on the trail so far, and with the latest commitment coming from the four-star Webb, that doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon.
“Oh yeah, me and Rob Greene’s connection is very strong. Each time we talk it just gets better and better. The second time I went up to Texas Tech he made a whole presentation for me and every time we spend time with each other it’s great.
Coach (Joey) McGuire, he made a group chat with all the commits. We’re getting to know each other, we text like all day pretty much. They’re all cool so I can’t wait to get up to Texas Tech and build a relationship with them.”
Final visit to West Texas a catalyst for decision
The weekend of June 13-15 was supposed to be an official visit to LSU for Donovan Webb. Instead, Webb released his top four on June 12th and his trip to Baton Rouge was no longer.
With an open weekend, Webb was invited by the staff to come out to Lubbock again which heavily shifted Texas Tech’s chances in landing the talented safety. He didn’t leave town before giving his verbal pledge to the coaches.
“Yeah, that day McGuire invited me to his house for a pool party so I accepted it, went up there, hung out with the players and the coaches. Met with Rob Greene again. It was great. That’s kinda where I made my decision off was after that.
That day I was leaving I went ahead and told the coaches that I was committing. They were all hyped and fired up about it.”
Webb is locked in with the Red Raiders
With 37 offers to his name, other programs are sure to continue recruiting Webb moving forward. For his part, Webb says he isn’t interested, and is solely focused on getting to Texas Tech.
“I believe I’m 100% shut down, so I’m not gonna pay any attention to that. I’m just focused on Texas Tech right now.”
A big time playmaker is headed to Texas Tech
As a junior, Webb was credited with 120 tackles, five interceptions, two forced fumbles, two punt return touchdowns, nine pass breakups and 172 rushing yards. Named the District 7-4A Co-Defensive MVP, Webb will look to continue being a big time playmaker for Red Raider fans in the future.
“They’re gonna get a playmaker and I love to win. When they watch me on Saturday’s just know I’m ready to play and I’m a dog.”
Along with earning Co-Defensive MVP honors, Webb was also named First Team All-District at both cornerback and safety.
On the track Webb set personal records this spring in the 100 Meters (11.01 seconds) and 200 Meters (22.56 seconds). He also competes for the Panthers 400 Meters, 4×100 Relay and 4×400 Relay teams.
Webb is rated as an On3 Industry four-star prospect with an overall grade of 89.51. He checks in as the No. 336 prospect nationally in the 2026 class, the No. 33 safety and the No. 42 player in Texas.
