One of Georgia’s top targets in the Class of 2023 has made his pledge official, with the nation’s No. 42 overall prospect and four-star safety Joenel Aguero now on board.

Aguero, based out of Danvers, Massachusetts’ St. John’s Prep High School and previously playing at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, becomes Georgia’s seventeenth commitment in the Class of 2023.

Per the On3 Consensus, Aguero is not only the nation’s No. 42 prospect, but he is also the No. 5 safety for the class and the No. 2 prospect in Massachusetts in 2023. That makes him Georgia’s second highest commit currently.

The Bulldogs have long been considered a favorite to land Aguero, who has visited Athens several times over his recruitment.

After naming his top four, he made it clear to Chad Simmons that the relationship with the staff was what helped to separate Georgia in his mind.

“The reason I keep going back to Georgia is that it is like family,” he said. “I miss the coaches. Kirby Smart, Will Muschamp, and the coaches make it cool there. Georgia has always been one of my top schools. I am getting cool with Fran Brown now too, so the whole staff has gotten to know me and my family. Georgia has a need at safety in my class, so they offer me a chance for early playing time and to get developed by some great defensive coaches.”

That’s been a consistent theme throughout Aguero’s recruitment.

“Now, when I am at Georgia, it is about vibing with the coaches and chillin’. I did go over some things with coach Will Muschamp, but it was more about hanging out,” he previously told Simmons. “It is fun for me at Georgia. I hang out with the guys, go out, go bowling, and things like that. I am very relaxed there and I have great connections with the staff.”

The Classic City held its own charm.

“I like everything about Athens and Georgia. Just the vibe there feels right,” he said. “I am always vibing with the coaches and the players when I am there. I know everything about Georgia and I am very comfortable there.”

And development was also a key consideration, something Aguero has been taking notes of in Athens for some time now.

“The DBs at Georgia are fast and physical. I know a couple of them, like Lewis [Cine]. He’s a bigtime player from them, and he’s from where I’m from in Massachusetts,” he told DawgsHQ last season. “He grew up like ten minutes away from where I’m from, so we have a good relationship. Georgia’s DBs bring that fire when they play, and they’re just ready to go, especially with (at the time defensive backs coach) Coach [Jahmile] Addae and Coach [Will] Muschamp coaching them. They’ve got great coaches behind them.”

Joenel Aguero is Georgia’s fourth defensive back commitment of the Class of 2023 and the first safety.
