3 keys to victory

Dial in on perimeter D

More often than not, Nebraska will own a fairly distinct advantage from the 3-point line this season. However, Winthrop has the shooters to go three-for-three with the Huskers tonight. The Eagles come in ranked 54th nationally at 37.4% from 3-point range and average nearly 11 makes per game. That included a whopping 15 threes in their near upset of then-No. 21 Arkansas last week. For comparison, NU is shooting 35.9% (102nd) from deep with 11.5 makes per contest. Head coach Fred Hoiberg has hammered home the need for his team to defend the perimeter more consistently. Nebraska allowed 12 threes last time out to Kansas State, with seven of those coming from one guy (Abdi Bashir). Wintrop has seven players hitting above 30% from long range, led by Kareem Rozier (20 makes at 43.5%).

Get in the paint

When Nebraska has struggled on offense this season, it’s generally been when it settles for contested 3-pointers rather than getting the ball into the paint. That doesn’t mean it must score 48 points in the lane as it did against Kansas State. What it means is that the Huskers operate at a significantly higher level when the ball gets inside the 3-point line. Whether it’s for high-percentage shots or kickouts for open threes, paint touches are critical in Hoiberg’s five-out offense. Winthrop ranks 255th nationally in defensive 2-point percentage. Don’t settle on offense.

Make your free throws

Nebraska has gotten away with it thus far, but if it continues to leave points at the free-throw line, it’s inevitably going to cost them this season. It nearly did last time out vs. Kansas State. The Huskers shot just 12-of-20 at the stripe in a one-point win over the Wildcats. Granted, one of those misses was intentional in the game’s final second, but the other seven nearly cost NU the victory. Nebraska is now shooting 70.2% on free throws this season, ranking 205th nationally. Winthrop is another aggressive defense that has the propensity to foul early and often. Make your free throws, and tonight shouldn’t be a problem.

Quotable

“No, I’m not surprised at what he can do because I saw the confidence that the kid has and the swagger that he plays with. We need a guy out there that doesn’t have fear when he plays. And you see how he rises up and takes a 3 without any hesitation. I love his attack to the basket.”

-Head coach Fred Hoiberg on Big Ten Freshman of the Week Braden Frager’s early impact this season.

Prediction

Nebraska (16.5) 89, Winthrop 75

Robin’s season record: 6-0

Vs. the spread: 5-1
